Background knowledge is essential for reading comprehension because it helps students connect new information to what they already know. When students have prior knowledge about a topic, they are better able to understand vocabulary, make inferences, identify the main idea, and remember important details. Students with limited background knowledge may struggle to make sense of a text, even if they can read the words accurately. Teachers can build background knowledge through discussions, videos, photographs, real-life experiences, and read-alouds before introducing new texts. Activating and expanding students' background knowledge improves comprehension and helps all learners engage more deeply with what they read. \r\n\r\nThe books provided in this project provide rich and diverse books that complement our new curriculum. These books are being used as read alouds in class as well as for independent exploration.
