With these texts, we're working on essential reading strategies such as identifying main ideas and supporting details, making inferences, and using text features like headings, captions, and glossaries. Many of our students benefit from structured, visual layouts, and nonfiction books offer exactly that. We also incorporate lessons on critical thinking and real-world connections—discussing how the topics in the books relate to current events or their own experiences. For students with diverse learning needs, these texts provide a structured, factual framework that supports comprehension while still allowing room for curiosity and discussion.\r\n\r\nWhat does reading look like in your classroom?\r\nReading in our classroom is active, engaging, and highly individualized. We use a combination of read-alouds, partner reading, and independent reading time depending on the needs of each student. We often use visual supports, graphic organizers, and adapted text to increase accessibility. Discussion is a big part of our reading time—students are encouraged to ask questions, share what they've learned, and make personal connections to the text. The goal is not just to decode words but to understand and engage with the content. These new nonfiction books have added so much variety and depth to our reading block.\r\n\r\nAre there particular students who are especially enjoying the new books, and how so?\r\nYes! One student in particular, who is typically hesitant to participate during reading time, has taken a special interest in a book about animals and their habitats. He's been excited to read aloud and even shares facts from the book with staff during transitions. Another student, who struggles with comprehension but is very visual, has connected strongly with a book that includes lots of photographs and diagrams. It's incredible to see how the right book can ignite interest and confidence, especially in students who often find reading challenging. These books are helping students see themselves as readers, which is a powerful shift.","fullyFundedDate":1744290625063,"projectUrl":"project/reading-in-sped-filleveryshelf/9242549/","projectTitle":"Reading in SPED #FillEveryShelf","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Howard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9528430"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_19829","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":491,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":57,"percentAsian":15,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":56,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":58.3,"schoolId":19829,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about New Haven Junior/Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"New Haven Junior/Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/indiana/east-allen-county-school-district/new-haven-middle-school/19829"}
