These books will be used for the basis of a Culture in Literature semester capstone project. They will also offer students a unique glimpse into the worlds of two strong, observant, relatable, and admirable female characters. Coupled with our existing copies of Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," the vast majority of my students will see themselves represented in the texts we read, at least to some degree. These texts will add to the diversity of the class-sets of books I am able to offer my students for this project, and promote intercultural understanding, acceptance, and tolerance.
