They are highly engaged in the topics, excited to read, and—most importantly—building their confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading instruction looks different depending on what each student needs. We use skill-based groups so that I can target specific reading skills while students practice them with texts that are interesting and accessible to them. These books have given us the opportunity to practice important comprehension skills while also building fluency, vocabulary, and background knowledge.\r\n\r\nRight now, many of my students are learning about text structure. As they read, they are looking for clues that help them figure out how an author organized the information. They might compare how two things are alike and different, put events or steps in sequence, or identify causes and their effects. Instead of simply answering questions after reading, they are learning to really think about how a text works and use evidence from the book to support their thinking.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things about these books has been seeing how excited the students are about the topics. There is something pretty special about hearing a child say, \"Can we keep reading?\" during a reading group! Students who might normally be hesitant to read aloud are becoming more willing to try, and I am watching their confidence grow as the books become more manageable for them.\r\n\r\nFor second graders, becoming a reader doesn't happen all at once. It happens little by little. Every word they figure out, every connection they make, and every book that makes them want to read another one help them become readers. These books are helping us create those moments every day.\r\n\r\nIt has been wonderful to watch my students grow as readers, and we are only at the beginning of our year together. I cannot wait to see where these books take them.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for making this possible for my students.
