Everyday in the cold months students are searching for gloves, hats, and scarves to wear out to recess. We live in a low income area and it is hard to help provide for each student. But, this was such an amazing thing to receive. Now, we have a closet for students go into whenever they need to grab a pair of gloves or a hat. The best part about the gloves is they are all black so we don't have to worry about matching them. If the garments get soiled we just need to wash and reuse. The students love that they do not have to search for the correct sizes or pairs for their hands. There is something for everyone. As they found their way to their spots on the rug, smiling and practically vibrating with anticipation, I tried to keep my instructions short and sweet, to allow plenty of time for them to start exploring the new instrument in its place in our percussion circle.\r\n\r\nThe new alto xylophone allows more students to participate in active music-making, instead of sitting out and waiting for their turn to play. They experience a variety of musical styles through singing, listening and responding to recorded music, and - now - playing barred percussion instruments. As listeners and performers, students develop a greater understanding of melodic contour, dynamic contrasts, duration and rhythm, and a growing variety of instrumental timbres.\r\n\r\nKindergarten and first grade students take turns with a variety of barred percussion instruments, discovering how to make sounds higher and lower, louder and quieter, and longer and shorter. Students in second and third grade create simple rhythmic patterns using iconic and traditional notation to play on the percussion instruments, comparing and contrasting the more familiar classroom instruments with the unique sounds of the new xylophone and its fiberglass bars. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders have begun a composition project that will build on simple motifs they have each created based on a \"spark\" of an idea from their own lives and interests. They will combine digital graphic notation apps with their choice of instruments from our classroom.\r\n\r\nI am grateful to The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation for finding the value in this project and choosing to contribute. To each personal family member and friend who donated to this project: I treasure your support in this and so many other ways.
