After receiving the books I set up mini un-boxings, where I re-boxed books by grade level and then had the students open them during class time. These events were amazing because the students were thrilled with every book that came out of the box. Then they grabbed a book and a friend and sat down immediately to read one of their favorite stories. Obviously, I took this as a huge win.\r\nSince those unboxings, the students have kept up their excitement. Fourth graders are rereading first grade favorites like Tiny T. Rex and I Want My Hat Back, while third graders are reminiscing over the second grade reads I Need My Monster and Grumpy Monkey. Students have also been very interested in the books that their grade level has NOT gotten to read yet. Second graders are asking about Llama Destroys the World and Unstoppable, and first graders are curious about Narwhal and Jelly and The Three Ninja Pigs.\r\nWe have also now been able to make stronger connections between some of the things we already have in our library. Yes, we all read Pumpkin Jack before we did the experiment, but now we have the physical book to sit next to it and remind the students of why we have that rotting pumpkin in a jar. There are plushies of characters that now have their book with them, and not only can students read a book while holding that character, but they are also noticing details about them that they didn't before we had the physical book (Llama's pants are ripped because he ate too much cake!).\r\nUltimately, you have brought my students so much joy. As their librarian one of my top goals is to cultivate a love of reading - with your donation you have helped me do that, and I am forever thankful.","fullyFundedDate":1772738331437,"projectUrl":"project/our-favorite-shared-stories/10094078/","projectTitle":"Our Favorite Shared Stories","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7987866_orig.jpg?crop=1564,1564,x6,y679&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710018744117","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7987866"},{"teacherId":10084323,"projectId":9666582,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding my project. \r\n\r\nThe students use the pencils everyday to complete their assignments. Every week the students cannot wait to get their hands on them. I have done a few read alouds using some of the picture books, and they have quickly become favorites. Book talks are helpful for circulating the novels, although the lively covers and the relatable main characters are usually motivation enough. Some of my students' top picks are \"Hair Love\", \"Not Quite Snow White\", the Cameron Battle series, \"New Kid\", \"Kicks\", the April & Mae series, \"Stuntboy\", \"Curlfriends\", the Conjureverse series and \"The Me I Choose To Be.\"\r\n\r\nThe fact that you've added so many books with Black main characters to our school library, from picture books to graphic novels, is of course exciting to the students, but also meaningful to the staff, parents, and community. It shows you care about these children - their self-esteem, their love of reading, their worldview, and their futures. Your commitment to helping these students succeed in life is inspirational.","fullyFundedDate":1756568159889,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-black-students-by-black-autho/9482223/","projectTitle":"Books for Black Students, by Black Authors","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7987866_orig.jpg?crop=1564,1564,x6,y679&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710018744117","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7987866"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_28220","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":285,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":53,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":45,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"1 - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"11.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.2,"schoolId":28220,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Martin L King Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Martin L King Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/west-harvey-dixmoor-school-district-147/martin-l-king-elementary-school/28220"}
