We were originally going to do this for Thanksgiving but some of the food items would not get here in time so we did what teachers do best, we changed our plan. \r\n\r\nWe decided to allow each student to invite one adult to come and hang and eat breakfast. We were not sure how many adults would be able to come but our fingers were crossed! To our joy, 52/60 were able to attend. The parents had so much fun enjoying breakfast with their child. The kids were so excited to be with their buddy in school. \r\n\r\nThe best part? There were so many connections made. We observed parents who would never meet otherwise sit and talk over coffee, we saw students who typically did not talk to each other interact with one another. We saw parents talking to kids, kids talking to teachers, and community growing. This breakfast was probably one of the best things we were able to do this month and we owe it all to you. We started this off by watching Reading Rainbow about homelessness. We talked about our own observations and encounters with the unhoused. We also talked about what compassion is and how we can show it. After the lesson we packed our bags and made handmade cards. My students cold not stop talking about what we were doing! \r\n\r\nThe day after we made the bags I had two kids come up to me and talk about the plans that they had to continue helping. My students were so moved by their experience that they are not waiting for me to start the next compassion project. \r\n\r\nI am so grateful that you took the time out of your day and the your resources to help provide this experience.
