The second grade team at Union Ridge School will introduce flexible seating into one of the it’s three classrooms in the Fall of 2016. Flexible seating allows students to choose the best learning environment for themselves and change it as they see fit. Flexible seating will help my classroom reach this goal by allowing students to be more physically active by giving the choice between standing, sitting, kneeling and so much more. Research shows that physical activity can impact brain activity and academic performance for students. With this project, tables, exercise balls, stools, and storage for student materials will help to create a classroom open for collaboration, creativity, communication, and advocacy for students. I know my students will become better learners if they are given the choice to work in a way that is suitable to their needs and success. For those who still would like a desk and chair - the option will be there. For everyone else, the options are endless.
