As I work with autistic students, I try to make every lesson as interactive as possible. The more senses we can activate during learning, the more they retain. When I learned about Alive Studios Zoo, I knew in my heart that it would be beneficial for learning! Not only will they be able to see the zoo come to life visually, but they will actually be able to interact with the animals virtually while manipulating the cards and the iPad, along with hearing the animals.\r\n\r\n As school began, I had not received all of the equipment to make the program operate as it was created to. However, I received the rug first. My students were so excited that we had to set aside time each day just for them to walk around, observe, and discuss the animals and where they live. I can not begin to describe how beautiful and vibrant the rug is. The images of the animals look like photographs printed with yarn, and in the center is an area that represents the zoo, from farm animals, to desert animals, to jungle animals. I love it!\r\n\r\n The program has not been fully downloaded at this time, as there was a small issue with the flash drive. However, I was able to contact the company, and they are already working on a way to correct the problem. This is a small setback, but being able to work with a company so willing to immediately offer assistance was reassuring! Once everything has been downloaded, I plan to use the program daily as it comes with workbooks for each student, interactive flash cards for learning letters, words, and sentences, along with numbers for number recognition and number sentence structure. I am beyond thrilled to begin working with my students and seeing progress being made in areas that were otherwise stalled.","fullyFundedDate":1746786506898,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-autistic-students-with-3-d-zoo/9259915/","projectTitle":"Teaching Autistic Students with 3-D Zoo Alive!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lana Foster","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9369232_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744843492745","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9369232"},{"teacherId":10028904,"projectId":9336875,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation of books to our classroom library. These new texts have already made a tremendous impact on our students, particularly those with learning disabilities who now have access to books that match their reading levels. The variety of genres allows students to explore and discover what types of stories they enjoy most, sparking curiosity and helping them grow as readers. Many of the books also introduce valuable lessons in social-emotional learning, giving students opportunities to reflect on feelings, relationships, and problem-solving while strengthening their reading skills. Reading has truly become a time where students expand their imagination, build confidence, and see themselves as capable learners. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a daily practice that students look forward to. Several of our significantly below-grade-level readers especially enjoy the picture-based SEL books during Life Skills class, where they can connect with the stories visually while practicing comprehension and discussion. These books encourage them to engage with meaningful lessons in ways that feel accessible and enjoyable. It has been heartwarming to watch students who previously struggled to engage with text now become excited about reading time. Your generosity has not only placed books in their hands but has also given them tools to better understand themselves, others, and the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1747679667943,"projectUrl":"project/reading-is-essential/9336875/","projectTitle":"Reading is Essential","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Penny","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10028904"},{"teacherId":9343692,"projectId":9101806,"letterContent":"My students' faces lit up the moment they saw the new books arrive! Thanks to your generosity, our classroom library is now filled with fresh titles that match my students' interests and reading levels. They've been eagerly recommending books to each other, swapping favorites, and discovering authors they've never read before. These books have created a buzz around reading that I've never seen before! Students are asking for more time with their books, and even taking them home to share with family. The addition of diverse, engaging, and high-interest texts has helped foster a true love of reading among my students, while also introducing them to important literacy skills and life lessons embedded within these stories.\r\nMany of the new texts explore themes such as perseverance, empathy, self-discovery, and problem-solving—concepts that are incredibly meaningful to students at this stage in their academic and personal growth. Whether students are diving into realistic fiction that helps them understand the perspectives of others, exploring fantasy worlds that stretch their imagination, or learning through nonfiction texts about history and science, the content has opened the door to deeper conversations and critical thinking.\r\nFrom a skills standpoint, the books have supported growth in areas such as identifying theme and main idea, understanding character development, making inferences, and building vocabulary. Because the texts span a range of genres and levels, I've been able to differentiate reading instruction in a way that meets each student's needs. During our reading block, we use a combination of independent reading, literature circles, and small group guided instruction. Students select books from our library that interest them, and it's common now to see them curled up in their reading corner or enthusiastically talking about what they've read with a peer.\r\nReading is no longer just a subject—it's an experience. The classroom buzzes with book talk. Students are not only meeting their reading goals, but they're setting higher ones for themselves. One student, Josiah, who used to shy away from independent reading, has found a love for graphic novels. Since discovering a new favorite series from our donated collection, he now finishes one book a week and participates more confidently in class discussions.\r\nAnother student, Naomi, has been deeply drawn to historical fiction. She recently read a novel set during the Civil Rights Movement and was inspired to write her own short story about a young girl facing injustice. The empathy and insight she has developed through this story—and others like it—are reflected in her writing and conversations.\r\nEven students who once struggled with reading stamina are now eagerly reading during any spare moment. They've created their own classroom \"book club,\" where they share favorites and recommend stories to one another. It's been powerful to see students take ownership of their reading journeys and grow in both confidence and capability.\r\nOverall, the donated books have done more than expand our shelves—they've expanded our minds, conversations, and community. Reading in our classroom is now filled with choice, purpose, and joy. The stories these books bring are shaping how students see the world and their place in it, and for that, we are immensely grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1744290657063,"projectUrl":"project/building-my-classroom-library/9220768/","projectTitle":"Building My Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Renner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9928505"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_107714","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":702,"numTeachers":48,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":69,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"14.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":78.3,"schoolId":107714,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sparta Lincoln School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sparta Lincoln School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/sparta-community-school-district-140/sparta-lincoln-school/107714"}
