The solid construction will help them last for many years to come. Best of all, the bars have built-in thermometers and are easy to read for my students as our first unit is Heat Transfer. Furthermore, the metals are labeled and the sample size of them is approximately 6 inches ~ this helps when we place them into a hot water bath. At this age the students break things on accident and having so many of these will help us all rest well that we won't be \"short\" a thermometer or two. The device is often used as a \"desk toy\" but we use it as a tangible example of how heat and pressure are related at the atomic level. The device is gently held in the palm of your warm hand. Your skin warms the colored alcohol inside the glass, the colored liquid rises up the stem of the chamber like a thermometer.
