I feel honored to be able to do Physics of Music Fridays in my Biology class in hopes of creating a truly investigative physics laboratory. This project has already changed the way my students experience mathematics and science. Using the keyboards, students have investigated pitch, frequency, octaves, intervals, Mersenne's Laws, and the Equal Temperament Formula, making connections between mathematical equations and the sounds they hear every day. What has been most exciting is hearing students who might normally hesitate to talk about mathematics enthusiastically discussing formulas, frequency ratios, harmonics, and sound. Administrators have even visited my classroom and heard students talking with one another about mathematical relationships and how those relationships explain music. Students are beginning to realize that mathematics is not simply something they calculate on paper—it can explain something they can hear, create, and investigate.\r\n\r\nThe six drum pads and stands will allow us to take that learning even further. Students will investigate how vibrations produce sound and how changes in the way a surface is struck affect amplitude, waveforms, harmonics, and timbre. Working in teams, they will create sounds, make predictions, collect evidence, visualize waves, and explain their observations. These experiences are helping me build a truly interactive Physics of Music Laboratory where students PREDICT → CALCULATE → PLAY → MEASURE → SEE → EXPLAIN. Most importantly, the project is changing students' attitudes toward mathematics.
