I was very excited to expose my students to a different modality of learning. The students mainly work with copies and chrome books to do their work. Having a physical book to read was a different experience for this school year. \"Class Act\" by Jerry Craft exposed the students to a graphic novel, very different from the usual chapter book format. Some students were intrigued with the book. Some of the other students were not as interested, but I was happy to expose them to the different format.\r\n\r\nFor this novel study, we read the book together. I understand that all students do not learn the same way. I provided a video format of the book for the students to listen to as well. The audio had different voices for the characters, and the students could hear the tone of the characters' feelings. I was able to appeal to the visual, audio and kinetic learners.\r\n\r\nWe also had class discussions on prejudice, biases, code-switching, racism and stereotypes. This opened the students' eyes to a world outside of their daily routines and interactions. Although some of the students saw the novel study as just another assignment to do in class, I did have students that were really engaged and participated in the discussions. I was extremely happy to show the students another side of life.","fullyFundedDate":1741546435137,"projectUrl":"project/exploration-of-beyond-technology/9147524/","projectTitle":"Exploration of Beyond Technology","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Johnson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9937414"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_20763","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":418,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":97,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.1,"schoolId":20763,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Perspectives Charter School - High School of Technical on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Perspectives Charter School - High School of Technical","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/perspectives-charter-schools/perspectives-tech-charter-high-school-calumet/20763"}
