By reading Letters from Rifka, students are learning about Ellis Island, immigration, and the challenges families faced when starting a new life in America. The novel helps bring history to life by allowing students to connect with a character's experiences, emotions, and challenges.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is more than simply finishing a book. Students practice identifying main ideas, summarizing, making inferences, analyzing characters, determining themes, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. Through discussions, written responses, and cross-curricular activities, students are also developing their vocabulary, comprehension, and ability to connect what they read to historical events and the world around them.\r\n\r\nThe new books have made reading feel more engaging and meaningful for my students, especially those who enjoy historical fiction and stories that connect to real life experiences. Students are excited to follow Rifka's journey and discuss the challenges she faces, which encourages empathy and deeper thinking. For many students, this project helps them see that reading can be a way to understand history, explore different perspectives, and connect with people whose experiences may be different from their own. These books are helping create a classroom where reading sparks curiosity, conversation, and meaningful learning.","fullyFundedDate":1778017143788,"projectUrl":"project/cross-curricular-ellis-island-study-usin/10247839/","projectTitle":"Cross-Curricular Ellis Island Study Using Letters from Rifka","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Burris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10489802_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1777666129290","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10489802"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_26928","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":506,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":15,"percentAsian":24,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":78.3,"schoolId":26928,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Grove Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Grove Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/mclean-co-unit-district-5/grove-elementary-school/26928"}
