While I teach in English, more than half of my students are native Spanish speakers, and these books have opened the door for them to grow as readers in a way that feels comfortable, empowering, and joyful.\r\n\r\nFor many donors who love reading but may not be familiar with teaching literacy, these books support essential skills such as comprehension, vocabulary development, and fluency. When students read in a language they understand well, they are better able to make predictions, identify key details, and build confidence as readers. These skills transfer directly to their English reading, helping them become stronger, more capable learners overall.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks like choice, engagement, and discovery. Students spend time exploring books independently, reading with partners, and discussing stories together. Some students eagerly read the text, while others—especially those who are still developing reading skills—begin by studying the pictures, building understanding, and gaining confidence. Every student is participating in a way that meets them where they are.\r\n\r\nWhat has been especially powerful is seeing how excited students are to have books they can truly connect with. Several of my reluctant readers, who previously avoided books, are now picking them up daily—some reading, others carefully examining the illustrations and retelling stories in their own words. Many students have expressed how happy they are to see characters, language, and experiences that reflect their own lives.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, reading in our classroom is no longer just a task—it's something students are choosing, enjoying, and taking pride in. Thank you for helping create a space where every child feels seen, supported, and excited to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1766953715452,"projectUrl":"project/help-me-inspire-readers-donate-spanish/9884634/","projectTitle":"Help Me Inspire Readers: Donate Spanish Books for Bright Futures","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Spraker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7904964_orig.jpg?crop=1936,1937,x0,y6&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1626362562029","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7904964"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25618","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":634,"numTeachers":54,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":24,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"11.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":25618,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Richard D Crosby Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Richard D Crosby Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/harvard-community-unit-school-district-50/central-elementary-school/25618"}
