For me, the size and sturdiness of the board provide a reliable place to work where students can dive int without any worry of it tipping over. Its dual-sided nature is particularly useful, allowing a pair or trio to be situated on each side simultaneously. Because it's on wheels, we can easily move the station to wherever it's needed most. I've noticed that students who are often reluctant to write with traditional pencil and paper are now writing significantly more when they can choose a dry-erase marker in a color they love. This setup allows me to observe the writing process in real-time and see exactly who is contributing what by having each student select a different color of marker. \r\n\r\nWe have been using the board extensively for warmups before reading or collaborative thinking before transitioning to formal writing. Recently, students gathered before a reading lesson on using prefixes to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words. I had listed three prefixes and asked them to write every word they could think of with that prefix. Not only did I get a strong sense of what they already knew, I had an opportunity to make some subtle corrections to misunderstandings, such as \"unformal\" being a word to use instead of \"informal.\" Students did not see this discussion as a correction, more like a launching point for a great discussion of how even though certain prefixes mean the same thing, we may use them differently. \r\n\r\nAs seen in the photos, this visual and interactive approach keeps everyone engaged in the writing process. When the students first saw the materials, there was a visible wave of excitement; the \"wow\" factor of the vibrant marker colors alone was enough to get them eager to participate. Students recently worked together to create shared graphic organizers about an animal of their choice. They used these organizers to prepare to draft, using pencil and paper, informational paragraphs. Looking ahead, our next steps involve using these collaborative brainstorms to draft more complex writing. Having this amazing set of resources has made my classroom feel like a special place.","fullyFundedDate":1764614122279,"projectUrl":"project/developing-language-growing-learners/9596549/","projectTitle":"Developing Language Growing Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4424148_orig.png?crop=503,503,x73,y20&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755198577252","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4424148"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_26080","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":330,"numTeachers":37,"percentFrplEligible":29,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":42,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"8.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":83.2,"schoolId":26080,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dewey Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dewey Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/evanston-skokie-cmty-csd-65/dewey-elementary-school/26080"}
