I set up the beauty shop in dramatic play one weekend, so it was a complete surprise when my students came in on a Monday morning. The light from their faces could have ended a power outage. They were all so excited and ready to explore that it was difficult to get through our phonics lesson! \r\n\r\nAs they took turns in the center, I heard wonderful conversations. \"This is how my mama do it.\" \"Can you help me hold this?\" \"Look, I'm trying to get it like this [picture].\" \"This looks like my mommy, she has the beautifullest [sic] hair.\" As I supported students in the center, I introduced the idea of paying, role-playing as a customer and a service provider, and more descriptive words for what they wanted or saw. \r\n\r\nMy students also taught each other. I saw my students teach each other how to put in a hair tie to make a ponytail, how to make a braid, and what products they use at home. Their play supported practical skills and strengthened their hands and fingers, which in turn supported their writing! \r\nThank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1772999517771,"projectUrl":"project/representation-through-play-hair-braidi/10135467/","projectTitle":"Representation Through Play: Hair Braiding and Styling","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Sprinkle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10458973_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1772854661077","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10458973"},{"teacherId":10088911,"projectId":9490903,"letterContent":"The nonfiction books donated by NIU have had an immediate and meaningful impact on my first-grade classroom. Before this donation, our class library contained very few nonfiction texts, which limited students' opportunities to engage with informational reading outside of whole-group lessons. Now, students have daily access to high-interest National Geographic Kids titles on animals, habitats, weather, space, and other science-aligned topics.\r\n\r\nThis has strengthened both literacy and content learning. Students are choosing nonfiction books independently during reading time, asking questions, making observations, and using text features (photographs, captions, diagrams) naturally in their reading.\r\n\r\nThe donation has also supported our Plants & Animals science unit. Students have been using the animal books to learn about physical traits, behaviors, and life cycles, and then apply those facts in discussions and writing about how different animal parents meet the needs of their offspring. The books provide real-world examples that reinforce vocabulary and deepen comprehension far beyond what our curriculum alone could offer.\r\n\r\nBy expanding access to informational texts, the NIU donation has helped build background knowledge, increase student engagement, support our academic units, and make nonfiction an exciting and accessible part of our everyday learning environment.","fullyFundedDate":1757355583345,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-the-world-to-life-with-nonficti/9490903/","projectTitle":"Bringing the World to Life With Nonfiction!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lucchesi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10088911_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753214456897","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10088911"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134252","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":500,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":55,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":28,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":134252,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dr. Leroy A.
