This school year is my seventh as a school social worker for Chicago Public Schools and my sixth at Disney II Magnet School. I find my students to be so funny, cool, and creative. I truly love them all with my whole heart. Your donation has helped me continue to support their social-emotional growth while bringing new energy and materials into our social work sessions. \r\n\r\nMy students are so excited about the materials funded through this project. The majority of the students I service have 504 plans or IEPs. Thus, they benefit from opportunities to explore and express their emotions in different ways. The use of therapeutic and play-based techniques help provide a safe, accessible, and developmentally appropriate way for students to express themselves and learn new social emotional skills. The sensory aspect of sandtray therapy helps students to slow down, regulate, and tune into their inner experiences. \r\n\r\nWe have already completed several activities with these materials that encourage self-awareness, reflection, and confidence-building. For example, a few students explored character traits in animals or superheroes and then used the building blocks to create a figure that reflect3ed their own strengths. In sand tray, students have been creating stories and sharing pieces of their inner worlds. These activities are increasing engagement and strengthening each student's ability to understand their needs and advocate for themselves. \r\n\r\nSince receiving these materials, I've continued learning about play-based practices through professional development, training, and books. As a social worker, I prioritize continued education to ensure I use therapeutic strategies effectively and ethically. \r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students, in their potential, and in the power of social-emotional learning!
