As an in need school, we lack the resources that our students and athletes need to have access to quality weight room programs. With your donations, we were able to get new barbells for the bench and squat racks, and dumbbells for all to use. Since getting the items, there has been an increase in weight room use. Almost every day, our gym classes and multiple athletic programs are now using the new equipment in the weight room. This has increase our ability to serve more students and athletes at a time. It's a book containing 14 research-backed strategies to increase student agency and collaboration in the classroom. My students LOVE using these strategies and your donation is a HUGE part of this!\r\n\r\nLildejahl's research shows that doing math on vertical whiteboards, in groups, with one marker per group, leads to the most engagement. When I introduce a new concept, I've noticed students are more willing to start trying sooner if they know they can erase. Whiteboards also allow the entire group to see the writer's thinking, increasing shared learning and allowing for non-writers (I call them \"consultants\") to provide feedback. After every problem, the group must rotate writers. They only get one marker, so they are forced to communicate their thinking. When I'm walking around to monitor work, students are reminded to use \"our\" instead of \"my\" to describe their work, taking ownership of the work whether they were the writer or the consultant.\r\n\r\nThe toughest part to get started on this is having materials, but that was no issue because of your generosity. Thanks to your donation, we were able to acquire essential sewing tools and supplies—such as sewing machines, scissors, pins, needles, measuring tools, and thread—for a group of bright and eager young people at South Shore International High School.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has helped lay the foundation for what will be a transformative experience for these youth—offering them not just skills in sewing, but also opportunities for creative expression, problem-solving, patience, and confidence-building. Every machine and item that now lines our classroom shelves is a visible symbol of your belief in the potential of these students.\r\n\r\nThat said, I want to be fully transparent with you about a current challenge we are working diligently to overcome. While we now have the tools and equipment needed to run the sewing program, we have encountered an unexpected shortage of one crucial item: fabric. Without sufficient fabric, our students haven't yet been able to fully engage in the hands-on learning experience we envisioned. Many of them come to our space each week excited and hopeful, only to discover that we're still waiting on the final piece that will allow them to truly begin their sewing journey.\r\n\r\nI understand how disappointing this news may be, and share that feeling deeply. However, we also want you to know that your donation has not gone to waste. The sewing machines and materials you helped fund are ready and waiting. I'm actively seeking partnerships, discounts, and donations from local fabric stores, wholesalers, and even individual donors in order to secure the materials needed to move forward. We're also exploring creative interim solutions, such as upcycling old garments and accepting gently used fabric donations.\r\n\r\nWhile this delay has been a challenge, it has also underscored just how important this program is to our students. Their eagerness and resilience have been heartening. They continue to show up, learn techniques using paper patterns, and practice threading machines and stitching by hand—all in anticipation of the moment they can finally start creating.\r\n\r\nYour support is what made this possible in the first place, and we are committed to making sure your generosity translates into meaningful outcomes for our youth. I will keep you updated as progress unfolds and look forward to sharing stories, photos, and finished projects as soon as our young creators can begin their work in earnest.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your compassion, your patience, and your belief in the potential of the next generation. We are incredibly grateful for your donation.","fullyFundedDate":1738798262247,"projectUrl":"project/and-they-sew-on/8981433/","projectTitle":"And They Sew On!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Orange","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp87335_orig.jpg?crop=276,276,x0,y36&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733257195503","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-orange"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_101766","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":562,"numTeachers":37,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":96,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.9,"schoolId":101766,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Shore International College High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Shore International College High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/chicago-public-school-district-299/south-shore-international-college-prep/101766"}
