With it, forensic science students were able to engage in a 2-week murder mystery journey! Not only were students engaged and working the entire time, but the breadth of the lab made it incredibly rich. Students worked through 12 different labs, really pushing their thinking, knowledge, and skills. \r\n\r\nInquiries in Science: Investigating Forensics was used as an extension but really helped solidify students' understanding of blood types! Simple to set up but moved the needle! The impact of these materials went far beyond what I could have imagined when writing the original proposal. They transformed our classroom into a space filled with creativity, critical thinking, and joy.\r\n\r\nWhen the LEGO kits first arrived, the students were ecstatic. Some couldn't believe the boxes were for them. Many of my students come from under-resourced communities and have never had access to brand-new materials like this in a classroom setting. One student held up a LEGO box and said, \"Wait... we get to use this in school?\" Their sense of ownership and curiosity was immediate.\r\n\r\nWe began with a three-day unit called the \"LEGO Team Challenge.\" The goal was to use the kits not just for building, but as tools to practice and reflect on real-world skills like collaboration, communication, and adaptability. \r\n\r\nOn Day 1, students were paired up and assigned roles like \"Builder,\" \"Planner,\" or \"Communicator.\" They filled out a team worksheet outlining their plan for working together and dove into their build with excitement and energy. It was amazing to watch students who are sometimes reluctant to speak in class actively negotiating, problem-solving, and laughing together.\r\n\r\nOn Day 2, we introduced Challenge Cards—surprise constraints that forced them to adapt their teamwork strategies. For example, one team had to switch roles mid-build, while another could only use one hand each to complete a section of their set. These challenges led to some of the most memorable classroom moments. One group initially struggled when they were told they couldn't speak for five minutes, but they ended up developing hand signals and facial expressions to stay coordinated. Afterward, they reflected, \"We thought it was going to be impossible, but we actually communicated better!\"\r\n\r\nBy Day 3, it was time for presentations. Each pair presented their completed build and explained how they worked together, what obstacles they faced, and how they overcame them. The pride was visible on their faces. They were no longer just students—they were engineers, teammates, and storytellers. One of the most powerful moments came when a quiet student who rarely participates spoke with confidence about how their team managed a setback when a structure collapsed mid-build. \"We just rebuilt it,\" they said, \"but smarter this time.\" That moment said it all.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, students will reflect on what they learned by writing short essays about teamwork and resilience. As newcomers, many of them are adjusting not only to the new school system but also to the new cultural landscape, so taking a moment to get to hang out with their classmates without the pressure of a grade is greatly enjoyed. \r\nThe craft closet was especially appreciated in December as the holidays approached. We used the flower pot, paint pens, and bracelet kits to create gifts for friends and loved ones. Other students created memento between friends to take gome before stepping away from the stability of school for the holiday break. Students also spent time creating classroom decorations with the origami and crafting paper, turning our classroom into a festive space to smile, laugh, and share stories in together. \r\nThe craft closet is still stocked, and the remaining paper, craft kits, coloring books, and markers are a helpful motivator for students who know they can turn to it for a break once assignments are completed or for creating some holiday cheer (Valentine's day rocks are in the works!) .
