When I showed the students the boxes of new supplies they were so excited to try out everything. We held a vote to figure out what hobbies to explore first. In case you are curious, the top picks were sticker art, bocce ball, and origami. Check out the pictures to see some of of our fun trying out these pastimes!\r\nAs the boxes rolled in, the new materials have provided a special opportunity for me as a school occupational therapist (OT) to work on skills like following a model, sequencing steps of the activity, organizing materials, and working on the fine motor skills in the context of meaningful activities. I've found that this leisure exploration group gets buy-in from my high school students like nothing else. I work closely with the special education teaches and special education classroom assistants to both build skills and expose our students to things they may want to do themselves in their free time. Some of the students have already found meaningful hobbies that provide a way to connect with others. Others have found a soothing activity they can turn to help themselves self-regulate. Leisure activities are not always accessible to these students, and bringing them within reach is having a powerful impact.
