The new books have had an incredible impact on our students in our multi-age Montessori upper elementary classroom of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in Chicago Public Schools. Battle of the Books has created a level of excitement around reading that is truly special. Students are not only reading more, but they are also reading with purpose — discussing characters, analyzing plots, remembering details, and working together as teams to prepare for the competition. The books have introduced students to a wide variety of genres, authors, and perspectives while strengthening important skills like comprehension, critical thinking, teamwork, and discussion.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, social, and student-driven. Students spread throughout the room reading independently, gather in small groups to quiz each other on details from the books, and excitedly debate favorite characters and moments from the stories. Because our classroom is multi-age, older students often help younger students remember important plot points or encourage them through more challenging texts. The Battle of the Books program has helped many students see reading as something joyful and collaborative instead of simply an assignment. \r\n\r\nThanks again!","fullyFundedDate":1772244699767,"projectUrl":"project/book-lovers-unite-let-the-battles-begin/9865942/","projectTitle":"Book Lovers Unite!
