For almost every student in my room, reaching a college campus means breaking ground as the very first in their family to pursue higher education.\r\nMy primary mission as their teacher is to help them develop and hone the academic skills necessary to thrive in high school, college, and beyond. To do that, I must build a learning environment that captures their imagination, honors their identities, and inspires a genuine, lifelong love of learning.\r\nCompeting for Their Hearts and Minds\r\nIn today's fast-paced world, I am constantly competing for my students' attention against social media, digital media, and the heavy realities of daily life. On top of that, many of my students enter my classroom carrying a discouraging belief about themselves. I often have students tell me straight away, \"I don't read.\"\r\nAs an educator who believes fiercely in their potential, I simply cannot accept that from a young person. Part of becoming a lifelong learner is becoming a reader, but to ignite that spark, students need books they can identify with and relate to. They need stories that grip their attention and refuse to let go.\r\nTitles like Enrique's Journey and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian are modern, powerful works. They offer my students an authentic entry point into literature, turning reading into an enjoyable hobby.\r\nFrom a Heartbreaking \"No\" to a Joyful \"Yes\"\r\nBefore your support made this project a reality, the worst feeling in the world as a teacher was having a student fall in love with a story, ask if they could take the book home to keep reading, and having to tell them no because we only had enough copies for a shared class set.\r\n\"Thanks to your kindness, I never have to say 'no' again. Every single student now receives their very own personal copy of these books.\"\r\nHaving their own copies changes everything. It allows my students to:\r\nMaster Active Reading: They can write notes in the margins and learn the crucial academic skill of annotation.\r\nBuild Independent Habits: They can take their books home and continue reading on their own schedule.\r\nDiscover a Passion: They can experience the magic of getting lost in a story long after the final school bell rings.\r\nA Lasting Impact\r\nWe are about to embark on a fantastic literary journey together, and I am certain that these titles will turn our reluctant readers into lifelong readers.
