We have had fewer spills since they started using their new desks. \r\nOne thing I did not anticipate was how some students roll their desks to grab a pair of scissors or to skip the commercials from our visual timer on YouTube. They were even more excited when they saw the unrolled carpet that looks just like the bowling lanes from Special Olympics. We have used the materials on our Fun Fridays to continue working on our bowling skills and social skills with our social skills volunteers.\r\nOur school social worker has recruited social skills volunteers to work with other students who may be shy, new to our school, or have disabilities and need support to develop social connections and foster friendships. The best way for students to strengthen their social skills is by observing, modeling, and practicing these skills with others. In the past two months, I have observed so many middle school students coming over to say hi, give high fives, and have conversations with my students in the hallway, lunchroom, and playground. When we walk into art or music, they come over to greet us and walk with us to our seats. \r\nWe recently had our first quarter middle school incentive of a field day on a Friday afternoon and my students managed the bowling station. Many of our students have never gone bowling before and my students were so proud to be able to show them how to roll a bowling ball and set up pins. Seeing the smiles on their faces when they realized that they were able to teach someone else how to bowl was priceless. It was such a special moment to watch my students step into the role of teachers and see their confidence shine. Each student now has their own personal notebook and pencil case filled with writing tools, scissors, and glue—all of which have helped them become more organized and responsible in the classroom. Some of our students have even utilized it as a safe space to wait for their bus to pick them up at the end of the day. \r\n\r\nCurious little eyes peek over the divider to see what the new space holds and it is very fun to see the kids exploring the materials spontaneously. Students frequently use the spinning seat or launch themselves from the trampoline onto the safety of the bean bag. The bear has become a favorite companion while bouncing on the peanut ball. Students also enjoy exploring the other sensory items such as the sensory wall and marble mazes. We are still working on incorporating the dinosaur busy board and the sequin sensory wall as those will require a bit of construction to move around bulletin boards! We hope to accomplish that over the summer. \r\n\r\nOne unexpected bonus of our sensory area is the new room divider. Your donations of school supplies have made a tremendous difference in creating an engaging and supportive learning environment for our students. The books, especially those featuring girls as protagonists, have sparked excitement and inspired important conversations about representation and empowerment. These stories are fostering a love for reading and encouraging students to see themselves in the characters they read about, which is invaluable.\r\n\r\nThe addition of comfortable seating options, such as kick bands and wobble seats, has truly transformed the way our students learn. These tools have helped students stay focused and comfortable, especially for those who need a little extra movement to stay engaged. The lesson planning book, file folder pocket chart, and desk organization tools have also been game-changers for me as an educator. They've brought much-needed order and efficiency to our classroom, allowing me to dedicate more time to teaching and less to managing materials.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the importance of education and for supporting our classroom.
