Students were pulled in by King's realistic and engaging voice, which made the book accessible as a model for personal narratives. Students heard directly from a writer who genuinely wanted to share what he'd learned rather than from a typical textbook. Many students felt that King's explanation of his own process and struggles made them feel more confident when writing on their own.\r\nWe used On Writing as a mentor text for our personal narrative unit, studying the ways King used description, dialogue, voice, and pacing to bring his childhood experiences to life. Students read independently, analyzed key passages, and shared their responses during class discussions. Guided by class lessons and King's storytelling techniques in the 'Toolbox' section of the text, students drafted their own essays to include vivid details and authentic voice. \r\nThis book changed how students viewed writing in this context. They learned that good writing is about connection, clarity, and honesty. The gift of On Writing gave my seniors a clear model for writing personal narratives and turned a required assignment into a creative, empowering experience.","fullyFundedDate":1754462441183,"projectUrl":"project/writing-our-lives-with-stephen-king/9246429/","projectTitle":"Writing Our Lives with Stephen King","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kelly Rice","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp581778_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744074759071","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kelmcrice"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25709","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":728,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":81,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":67.4,"schoolId":25709,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Charleston High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Charleston High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/charleston-community-unit-school-district-1/charleston-high-school/25709"}
