Fred, our rescued three-legged red-eared slider, has quickly become more than a classroom pet. He has become part of our classroom family and a living science lesson that encourages curiosity, responsibility, compassion, and respect for living things.\r\n\r\nBecause of the generosity of our donors, we were able to provide Fred with a safe and appropriate habitat while giving students an experience they could never get from a textbook alone. Students are already asking questions, making observations, learning about Fred's needs, and understanding why proper animal care and habitats are so important.\r\n\r\nFred's story also connects beautifully with our classroom theme, \"Everyone Is Welcome.\" Although Fred is a little different because he has only three legs, he has a place where he belongs and is cared for—just like every student in our classroom. His presence gives us opportunities to talk about differences, perseverance, empathy, and what it means to take care of one another.\r\n\r\nThis project has added excitement and authentic learning to our classroom, and I know the lessons and memories created with Fred will stay with my students long after third grade. Having books with characters from different cultures and backgrounds helped create meaningful conversations while also encouraging students to read more independently.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts of this project was simply giving my students choice. As their reading skills and confidence grew, they were ready for chapter books and series they could really become invested in. These books gave them opportunities to practice important reading skills such as understanding characters, making connections, identifying themes, discussing events, and building reading stamina—but they were doing it with books they genuinely wanted to read.\r\n\r\nThank you for recognizing how important representation is in a classroom library. This has created a lot of enthusiasm and motivation, turning reading into a fun and rewarding activity. The new texts we've received, including titles like Marvelous Now, Curious Why, Magical Yet, and others, have sparked meaningful class conversations about identity, curiosity, and kindness. These books are not only engaging but also teach important social-emotional lessons. Books such as Everyone Feels Anxious Sometimes and Everyone Feels Sad Sometimes have been added to our Calm Corner and support our social-emotional learning curriculum.\r\nStudents will really enjoy the diverse stories that reflect Latin culture, which will be highlighted during Hispanic Heritage Month.
