We have set aside time every Friday to read these books chapter by chapter. The students are then reflecting on the societal impact of tuberculosis all over the world. The students are actually excited to read as these books are new and relevant to the times, as well as written by a well known author that they have read his past books.\r\n\tAs teachers, we have seen the decrease in literacy across the subjects, but I have personally seen it in science. Literacy plays a huge role in the science classroom. It helps students understand complex texts, communicate scientifically, increase their critical thinking, as well as knowing that science is not a silo belonging to itself but that it crosses all disciplines. It also brings the real world into the science classroom. The students are able to conceptualize concepts that before were just abstract throw away thoughts.\r\n\tThis specific book, \"Everything is Tuberculosis\" by John Green, specifically helps biology students. This is a real world application of infectious diseases, as well as those evolutionary and drug resistance applications. It shows that disease isn't just biology, but that it is a complex socio-economic situation that has to do with access to healthcare, sanitation, equity, and other public health issues. This book very well humanizes medical science, bringing real people and their stories to life. This allows students to see these cases as real humans suffering, instead of statistics.\r\n\tThank you again for your kind donation. It was unexpected and yet deeply appreciated.
