This donation means a lot to me and my students.\r\n\r\nFor three years, I've been trying to build a complete classroom set of ukuleles. I'd scrape together money here and there, borrow instruments, make do with what I had—but there was always that gap. Your donation closed it. Now when my students walk into my classroom, there's an instrument waiting for each of them.\r\n\r\nBefore your donation, we had to share ukuleles. Kids would get into a song, really start to feel it, and then—stop. Switch with a partner. Lose the momentum. Start over. I could see the frustration on their faces. Some students would check out while waiting for their turn, and the energy in the room would just deflate.\r\n\r\nNow, every student is playing—not watching, not waiting, not getting distracted. A quiet fifth-grader who never raises his hand in other classes picked up a ukulele and stayed completely focused on the entire song. He actually wanted to keep playing when class ended. That's the difference your gift made.\r\n\r\nWithout the constant switching and waiting, students are actually learning now. They're not losing their place. They're not getting pulled out of the moment. They're building real skills and real confidence because they get to stay engaged with their instrument the whole time. The difference in focus is noticeable—there's almost no distraction because nobody's sitting around waiting for their turn. Everyone's contributing. Everyone matters.\r\n\r\nThose soft mallets have been equally useful. Our tin bucket drums were so loud before that kids would actually cover their ears. Now they sound almost musical, and students actually enjoy playing them. Every complete classroom set I build opens up new possibilities for what we can do in class. With a full set of ukuleles now, I can finally teach the way I've been wanting to.\r\n\r\nHere's what matters—420 students come through my classroom every week. Every single one of them gets to experience real music-making now. The shy kindergartener. The fifth-grader who thinks he's \"not musical.\" The kid having a rough day. They all get to pick up an instrument and stay engaged the whole time.\r\n\r\nWhen students play together without interruption, they learn to listen to each other. They discover they're capable of creating something together. They learn that they belong in music class.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in music education. Thank you for believing in my students. This gift will impact them for years to come. You've given them something they didn't have before—not just instruments, but the chance to actually learn music instead of just waiting around for their turn. That matters.","fullyFundedDate":1765738064430,"projectUrl":"project/strum-drum-a-musical-journey-for-ever/9674955/","projectTitle":"Strum & Drum: a Musical Journey for Every Student","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jensen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10237807_orig.jpg?crop=203,203,x0,y20&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756853906993","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10237807"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55794","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":424,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":24,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":86,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"19.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":30.4,"schoolId":55794,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Garwood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Garwood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/idaho/lakeland-joint-school-district-272/garwood-elementary-school/55794"}
