We received a set of new Science Comics hard cover books and they are very popular, especially with my 5th grade students!\r\n Science Comics are a great tool because they are written as a graphic novel, using images and colors to engage readers while imparting real, true facts. They give student's a visual of difficult subjects which increases their understanding of important information. In fact, some studies show using pictures actually helps to boost a student's memory.\r\n The comic style book is an effective teaching tool because my student's go out of their way to check out these science comics instead of passing them by like some of the \"drier\" science books in our non-fiction section. These illustrated graphic novels interest my students by offering an wildly entertaining view of their subjects. Each book covers a different science concept, so whether a 4th grader is doing a natural science project or a 3rd grader wants to know more about flying or bats or electricity, there's something for everyone.\r\n Thank you again! The culminating project in this unit was a recreation of the Boston Tea Party. The kids had so much fun presenting their biography posters and then dressing up and acting out that fateful event in our history. They even made a feast in class of Colonial Stew and Knot Cookies.\r\n Our Kindergarten through 4th grade benefited from the addition of new books to science section. They were excited by the wonderful pictures in the DK Eyewitness books, which made them want to learn more about real world topics.\r\n Without donors like you, our library would be lacking these vital resources. This fall we investigated apples through tasting various apples, learning about how apples grow, participated in experiments and watched a video about how apple cider is made. We even explored an online apple orchid. The market stand was then turned into an apple orchard, where students could buy various apples, weigh and compare apples, pretend to make apple pie and apple sauce.\r\nIn Decemeber, we read and compared different Gingerbread Man stories. Our market stand was then transformed into a gingerbread store where students could purchase various supplies to make a \"gingerbread man.\" \r\nThese opportunities provided students with creative learning through play. Historical fiction Deepens Historical Understanding so students connect with real events, people, and places, and learning historical facts in context rather than in isolation. The students created stories set in the past, while connecting with the experiences of people who lived through those times, gaining empathy and perspective.\r\n\r\nWriting a story about the Revolutionary War encouraged my students to explore the challenges in the daily lives of that era. Creating a writing for publication strengthened their critical thinking and writing skills. They were able to separate facts from fiction through research and decided how to accurately represent historical facts while becoming published authors. We practiced plot development, character motivation, and setting description, which strengthens narrative writing skills. \r\n\r\nThrough this PBL, my students learned cause and effect, analyzing how events shape characters. The students Learned how to write from a character's perspective, allowing them to understand emotions, choices, and challenges.
