We truly appreciate the gardening tools and supplies that helped bring our project to life. Because of your generosity, our students were able to learn through fun, hands-on activities in our school māla (garden).\r\n\r\nOur project was based on the driving question, \"Are native plants worth protecting?\" Through this project, students learned about native Hawaiian plants, their uses, and why they were important to Early Hawaiians. Students explored plant identification, cultural significance, and how native plants help care for our environment.\r\n\r\nWith the gloves, kneeling pads, weeder, expandable hose, plant labels, utility wagon, and storage bench box, students were able to safely plant and care for plants in our garden. They learned the stages of a plant's life cycle and how to properly use gardening tools. The supplies helped students feel excited, responsible, and proud while working together in the garden.\r\n\r\nStudents planted important Hawaiian plants such as kalo (taro), ʻuala (sweet potato), and kī (ti leaf) in our school māla. They also created signs to identify the plants and explain why these plants were important to Early Hawaiians. This helped students better understand Hawaiian culture and the importance of mālama ʻāina, caring for the land.\r\n\r\nStudents also worked in teams to research native plants and create fact sheets to teach others about the plants they studied. They practiced teamwork, communication, and research skills while learning how to share important information with others.\r\n\r\nOne of the highlights of the project was our field trip to Waimānalo Beach Park. Students helped clean up debris left behind from a recent storm and learned about beach erosion. They planted native coastal naupaka plants to help protect the shoreline from erosion. This experience helped students see how native plants can make a real difference in protecting our beaches and environment.\r\n\r\nOne student reflected on the project by sharing:\r\n\r\n\"What I learned and will take into my life is how to plant naupaka and Hawaiian plants. Maybe when I grow up and live near the beach, I can plant naupaka to help stop beach erosion and protect the shoreline. I also want to grow Hawaiian foods like kalo and sweet potato in a garden. Then, if food is hard to get, I can harvest plants from my own garden. This project taught me how plants can help people and protect the environment.\"\r\n\r\nThis project helped students grow not only as learners, but also as caring stewards of the environment. We are very grateful for your support, kindness, and generosity. Mahalo for helping our students build a deeper appreciation for Hawaiian culture, native plants, and caring for our ʻāina.","fullyFundedDate":1754372185801,"projectUrl":"project/malama-mala/9519664/","projectTitle":"Malama Mala","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Padilla","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7932111"},{"teacherId":4288134,"projectId":9986718,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity!
