Having actual, tangible resources in the room completely changes the energy and takes the pressure off.\r\n\r\nDuring a group session, a few kids were sitting together around one of the new games. One student in particular usually barely says a word and sits off to the side. As the rest of the group looked through the materials, this student quietly picked up a conversation card and read the prompt out loud. Without any coaxing, they started sharing a story about their pet at home. The entire table listened, and soon everyone was chiming in with their own stories. It was such a genuine, heart-warming moment. Having these items gives the kids something to do with their hands, which lowers their defenses and makes it so much easier for them to relax, let their guard down, and actually talk to each other.\r\n\r\nWhen the kids first walked in and saw the boxes and the new setup, their eyes went huge. One of my regulars looked at the main table, turned to me, and asked, \"Wait, is all of this really just for us?\" You could see the immediate shift in their demeanor, they stood a little taller and couldn't wait to explore everything.\r\n\r\nFor a lot of these kids, the school day comes with social pressure and big emotions that are hard to process. Walking into a room stocked with brand-new games and tools made them feel deeply valued. Knowing that people out there pitched in just to send them cool stuff to make their school days better really meant a lot to them and honestly, it meant the world to me as well.\r\n\r\nNow that the kids are comfortable with the space, we're using our Lunch Bunch time to focus on practical skills like making friends and handling stress when things get tough.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, the students are going to take turns picking out the game or activity for the group and helping lead our chat topic. Giving them ownership helps build confidence and leadership skills that carry right back into the classroom. You've given us way more than just supplies you've helped create a safe, cozy spot where these kids actually look forward to coming. These aren't just toys or furniture to them—they are essential tools that have already begun to transform our daily learning environment. For my student with autism, the playdough has become a vital grounding tool during moments of sensory overload, providing the tactile input he needs to feel calm and safe. Similarly, my students with ADHD are using the wobbly stools and spinning seats to find the movement they crave, allowing them to remain regulated and engaged during lessons rather than struggling to sit still.\r\n\r\nBeyond emotional regulation, we are finding creative ways to integrate these tools into our academic work. During math, the playdough has been a favorite for practicing one-to-one correspondence. Watching my students enthusiastically press down on small dough balls to count out their answers has made abstract concepts much more \"real\" and hands-on. Looking ahead, these resources will remain a permanent fixture in our classroom. As we move into more complex math units and intensive writing projects, these sensory tools will be readily available to ensure every student—especially those with special needs—has the physical and emotional support they need to succeed.
