In social studies, we tied art directly into our unit on the ahupuaʻa, where students illustrated the different land divisions from the mountains to the sea, helping them visualize how resources were shared and used in ancient Hawaiʻi. These hands-on projects made learning more meaningful and helped students make strong connections between art and content.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were beyond excited. They loved seeing the vibrant markers, fresh paint, and full sets of colored pencils ready for everyone to use. With the materials that were donated, we were able to start our nursery right as our Sustainable Living Club (SLC) started off for the school year. Not only were students able to use the donated perlite & peat moss to grow plants from seedlings, but we also used those supplies to plant new Ma'o (Hawaiian cotton) into our school garden during a student-led teacher workshop. Even just having mats & buckets for students to use made the simplest task of pulling weeds more enjoyable for the students.\r\n\r\nWe'll continue to use these materials to prepare for our 3rd annual La Honua (Earth Day Celebration) in April. We plan to grow more Native Hawaiian plants to sell to our Keone'ula families to help bring more Native plants back into our Ewa communities. Students also use that time to share the knowledge they've gained about these plants & spread awareness about Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle.
