One meaningful project has been learning to kilo (observe carefully) different native plants growing in our māla (garden). Students have been using the materials to identify plants, document their observations, and better understand how each plant contributes to the ecosystem. It's been powerful to watch them slow down, look closely, and build a deeper relationship with the land.\r\n\r\nA special moment came when we used these resources to help organize and celebrate an Arbor Day event with our students and their families. Together, we explored the importance of planting and caring for trees, and students were able to share what they've learned about native plants. Families joined in planting, learning, and connecting, which made the experience even more meaningful for everyone involved.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and curious. Many were eager to start exploring right away, and it sparked thoughtful questions about the plants they see every day but hadn't fully understood before.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building their knowledge by tracking plant growth, expanding their observations, and creating projects that share what they've learned with others. We're excited to keep growing this work and deepening our connection to our māla and community. Your support has truly made these experiences possible.","fullyFundedDate":1771606185128,"projectUrl":"project/eyes-on-ina-lets-kilo/10103061/","projectTitle":"Eyes on ʻĀina: Let’s Kilo!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Balancio-Sadamaru","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9373166_orig.png?crop=705,706,x0,y40&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1702410380056","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9373166"},{"teacherId":10260900,"projectId":10103885,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our classroom. The materials from this project showed up and immediately became part of our daily routines, which is always the best sign that they were the right fit for the room.\r\n\r\nThe desk dividers have probably made the biggest difference. During independent reading and writing time, they give students just enough structure to stay focused without making things feel overly serious. I've noticed students settling into their work faster and staying with it longer, which has helped our reading block run a lot more smoothly.\r\n\r\nThe basketball hoop has also become part of classroom life. Students keep trying to dunk on me during transitions and brain breaks, which they are unfortunately getting better at. It's turned into a fun way to build movement into the day while keeping energy positive and manageable.\r\n\r\nThe LEGO sets were another immediate favorite. Students started building during structured time and then bringing their creations up to my desk to explain what they made and how it worked. My desk is definitely more cluttered now, but it's cluttered with some pretty impressive designs, so I'm okay with that tradeoff.\r\n\r\nAnd the stress balls are already gone—which honestly tells me they were exactly as useful as I hoped they'd be. Students used them the way they were meant to be used: quietly, consistently, and without interrupting learning.\r\n\r\nWe're also working through Holes together as a class right now, and it's been a great anchor for discussion and writing. Students are tracking characters, making predictions, and starting to support their ideas with evidence from the text more confidently.\r\n\r\nI really appreciate your support and the role you played in helping make our classroom a more focused, active, and enjoyable place to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1771495158466,"projectUrl":"project/focused-minds-active-bodies-and-stron/10103885/","projectTitle":"Focused Minds, Active Bodies, and Strong Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Viaud","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10260900_orig.jpg?crop=1170,1170,x0,y187&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763806561533","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10260900"},{"teacherId":10265954,"projectId":9917893,"letterContent":"Thank you for your donation to our classroom. Students were trading them, comparing them, organizing them, and at one point I'm pretty sure we accidentally created a full classroom fidget economy that got a little out of hand. I eventually had to step in and cause what my students now refer to as \"the Great Depression\" of the trading system so we could restore order. Everyone survived, and now the tools are being used the way they were meant to be used—to help students stay focused and calm while learning.\r\n\r\nSince then, I've seen students who normally struggle to stay seated during lessons stay engaged longer, and others use the sensory tools to reset instead of shutting down when work feels difficult. The chair bands especially have made a difference during longer reading and writing blocks. The reward items like loom bands and clay have also helped me motivate students who need that extra push to stay persistent.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, my students are genuinely happy to have these supports in the room.
