In pairs and trios, students had brief conversations about their given objects. Some students talked about attributes, behaviors, and life cycles of their animals, while other students talked about vehicle parts, passenger capacity, and type of environment the vehicle moves on or in. They had multiple opportunities to sort the objects in a variety of ways, each time explaining their thoughts to their partners.\r\n\r\nWe focused our learning on one particular machine learning model called a decision tree. The students practiced asking yes/no questions about their objects before creating their decision trees on paper. As they worked on their decision trees, they continued their discussions about what questions they might ask next to filter the objects down until they had just one object at the bottom of each yes/no branch. Students then tested out another group's decision tree to see if the questions were clear, and if they could filter the objects down through the branches. They also had the opportunity to share feedback about the decision trees. We then added a few new animals and vehicles into the mix to see how their current decision trees worked, which started new discussions about how this new data might result in revising and/or adding questions.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students! This has been an important beginning step to understanding AI and machine learning models. Our next step will be to create virtual sorting games using block-based programming, that will be geared towards providing our lower grade students fun ways to practice their skills in reading, math, and science.","fullyFundedDate":1771956826071,"projectUrl":"project/machine-learning-begins-with-humans/10106626/","projectTitle":"Machine Learning Begins With Humans","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7825676"},{"teacherId":9310384,"projectId":9755029,"letterContent":"Today was the first time I used the speaker. Dunno if the pop-up tents helped, but our school came in tied for 1st place among 8 schools. We were the only school that had tents in the stands to shield runners from the hot sun. The event lasted for 3 hours and we could see the other schools melting away.\r\n\r\nWe don't have pictures yet, but on May 15 we have for the 1st time an \"Econ Day.\" Each grade is to come up with a product to market and and sell. Ours is green onions. We put tents up during harvest time where students have to pull and wash green onions. Last time it was in a heavy rain. One of the most impactful moments occurred during a recent collaborative brainstorming session; instead of the usual scramble for working markers, students were able to glide to the new organizing cart, grab a vibrant set of Expo markers, and immediately begin mapping out their ideas. The electric sharpener has also become an unlikely hero—what used to be a three-minute distraction of hand-cranking and broken tips is now a five-second \"pit stop\" that keeps the momentum of our writing workshops alive. These tools have turned our transition periods from chaotic to seamless, allowing us to spend more time on discovery and less on logistics.\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes first arrived, the atmosphere in the room was electric. The students were genuinely touched to see high-quality, brand-new materials that were chosen specifically for their success. In an elementary special education setting, the \"hum\" of a busy classroom—from the buzzing of lights to the chatter of small groups—can often feel like a roar to students with sensory processing sensitivities. These headphones act as a vital \"off switch\" for that overwhelming sensory input, allowing my students to finally access their lessons without the constant interference of background noise.\r\n\r\nWhile many people use headphones for entertainment, in our classroom, they serve as a critical learning bridge. For my students, auditory filtering is a major challenge. By using this technology, they can engage with specialized instructional software like TeachTown and literacy programs with absolute clarity. The headphones allow the software's audio cues and verbal instructions to go directly to the student, ensuring that \"tuning out\" the environment leads directly to \"tuning into\" the curriculum.\r\n\r\nOne particular group of students who struggle with high levels of distractibility has shown remarkable progress. Before this project, these students would frequently stop their work to investigate every minor sound in the room. Now, they can sit for extended periods, successfully completing their independent tasks. One student in particular, who used to become very anxious during transitions and loud activities, now reaches for their headphones as a self-regulation tool. The professional-grade results. There is a palpable buzz in the room when they realize they can create something that looks like it belongs in a video game or a digital gallery. The vibrancy of the screens and the responsiveness of the tools have turned even the most mundane assignments into a \"can't-wait-to-start\" activity.\r\nImpact Spotlight: Finding a Voice\r\nI've noticed a profound shift in a few of my students who typically struggle with traditional written assignments.\r\n\r\nThank you for putting these tools into their hands. Before they started coding, however, they collaborated in pairs to design a maze for their robot. This process began with individual maze ideas sketched on whiteboards, followed by a discussion to select the best elements, which were then combined into a final paper \"blueprint.\"\r\n\r\nNext, it was time for construction! Students used wooden blocks to build the physical maze based on their blueprints, moving them closer to the coding stage. Some teams enhanced their designs with creative elements like traps, dead-ends, and exit signs. Each team presented their maze to the class, indicating a designated Start location and the possible path(s) to the End location.\r\n\r\nUsing block coding, students programmed their robots to navigate the wooden maze, performing actions like rolling, stopping, turning, and backing up.
