The third grade class that I teach comprises of 22 bright-eyed children from various ethnic backgrounds. There are 12 boys and 10 girls. Most of my students, who are 8 or 9 years old, are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation immigrants primarily from the South Pacific region of the Pacific Ocean. Academically, the range of learners is very diverse with a bottom heavy representation of struggling learners. Many of these students are learning basic English and trying desperately to make connections from their home language to a new one. However difficult it may be to address the needs of my students, the pleasure lay in the daily successes that we have. Sometimes, the cheers some in the form of doing well on a spelling test; sometimes in the form of mere participation; and sometimes in the form of being in school. The school that I teach at is called Pu`uhale Elementary School. With a student body of 240 kindergarten-fifth grade students, historically, PES struggles to do well on assessment test.
