Your contributions have had a tremendous impact on the learning experiences of my 5th and 2nd grade students, and I wanted to share how we've been utilizing the wonderful resources you helped provide.\r\n\r\nThe picture exchange books, dry-erase boards, pens, and Velcro materials have transformed our classroom communication and learning opportunities. I began by introducing picture exchange books during snack and lunchtime with my students. This natural, comfortable setting helped them understand how to use pictures to communicate their needs and preferences. Once they became familiar with the system during these informal times, I gradually introduced the picture exchange during our classroom instructional time. We've also integrated the velcro materials into our math and English language arts lessons, creating interactive answer boards where students can physically attach picture cards or word cards to respond to questions. The dry-erase boards have become essential tools for practicing high-frequency words and building simple sentences, thereby enhancing communication skills.\r\nWhen my students first saw the picture exchange materials, they were unsure about how to use them. They looked at the books with curiosity but uncertainty. However, through systematic instruction and consistent practice, they began to understand how these tools could help them communicate more effectively. I started with simple choices during snack time, showing them how to hand me a card to request what they wanted. It was truly exciting to witness those \"lightbulb moments\" when students realized these pictures could help them express themselves more clearly. Students who previously struggled to communicate their wants and needs began actively participating and engaging with the materials.\r\nNow that both my 5th and 2nd graders have mastered the basic picture exchange system, we're expanding its use across all subject areas. They continue to grow in their skills using the picture exchange books, becoming more confident and independent communicators each day. In math, students use the velcro boards to show their problem-solving steps and select answer choices. In English language arts, they're using picture and word combinations to build sentences and express their understanding of reading comprehension questions. My next goal is to help them transition from relying solely on pictures to incorporating more written words, building their independence in communication while still providing the visual support they need. We're working toward combining multiple communication methods so students can express increasingly complex thoughts and ideas.\r\nYour generosity has provided my students with the tools they desperately needed to succeed. Every time I see a student confidently use a picture card to communicate or successfully write a sentence on their dry erase board, I think of your kindness and support. You've not only provided materials, you've given my students a voice and the confidence to use it. Thank you for believing in our students and investing in their future. Your support makes all the difference in their educational journey.\r\nWith sincere appreciation,","fullyFundedDate":1741834412350,"projectUrl":"project/communication-and-crafts/9156851/","projectTitle":"Communication and Crafts","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Judy Perry","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9474167_orig.png?crop=73,73,x0,y9&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758854386074","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9474167"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70825","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":465,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":14,"percentAsian":23,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":36,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"23.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":37.5,"schoolId":70825,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Myron B Thompson Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Myron B Thompson Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/honolulu-school-district/myron-b-thompson-academy/70825"}
