As teachers, we spend hours working closely with students during small group instruction. Now, instead of being distracted by discomfort, we are able to dedicate our full attention and energy to meeting students' needs. This comfort directly translates into stronger instruction and more intentional support for every child.\r\n\r\nThe organizational materials—folders and sheet protectors—have elevated our student assessment system. We are now able to track student growth clearly and professionally, making parent-teacher conferences more meaningful and data-driven. Families can easily see their child's progress, strengths, and areas for growth. Your donation helped us strengthen the bridge between school and home.\r\n\r\nMost exciting of all, you helped us integrate the arts into literacy! During our Cinderella unit, students designed and decorated their own white canvas shoes as a culminating project. This activity connected literature, creativity, design, and self-expression in a way that truly brought learning to life. Students were engaged, proud of their work, and able to express their understanding in a creative and memorable way.\r\n\r\nThe new small group activities are also providing every student with focused, collaborative practice across subjects. The books were for continuations of first chapters that are introduced in our Houghton-Mifflin-Harcourt (HMH) English Language Arts curriculum. The first story that we read in the school year is the first chapter of Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo. We also read part of The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin and the first chapter of The Game of Silence by Louise Erdrich. The students were so excited to see that I had received the full-length copies as well as the sequels or prequels of these novels. For many students, The Game of Silence is the first book they have read that has Native American Indian characters. Many of my students as well as students from other 4th Grade classes have borrowed my books to be able to read the rest.\r\nThe shelf is a huge help because I ran out of space on my shelves for more books. One of the things that many parents say when they walk into my classroom is that I have a large classroom library. Two parent volunteers came in on one of the afternoons to build the spinning shelf. It allows students who need extra support to work closely with the teacher in a focused, comfortable setting. At the table, students feel safe to ask questions, share their thinking, and take risks in their learning—something that is not always easy to do in a whole-class environment.\r\n\r\nIn math, the table provides a place where we can break down concepts, use hands-on materials, and immediately address misunderstandings. When teaching and learning in a self-contained classroom, it's inevitable that students get restless or need a change of scenery to refocus and calm themselves. These chairs are always available if kids need to remove themselves from a distracting environment when working independently; plus, they're useful tools for kids to effectively get group work done, and they even serve as great props for skits and presentations - as seen in the photos. \r\n\r\nThe students are so excited to be released for independent work each day, that they always scurry to be the first ones to claim a chair. At the beginning of the year we only had 4, and having the additional 7 allows almost half the class to have the opportunity to use the seats at once creating a much more equitable environment in the room. I'm so happy to report that they are very conscious of taking good care of them and making sure they stay clean as well; surely a sign that they value these materials.","fullyFundedDate":1759622591544,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating-for-5th/9784529/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating for 5th!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Secreto","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8356714"},{"teacherId":9813907,"projectId":9717249,"letterContent":"All of my students are using the headphones with microphones daily, because of your kind donation.\r\n\r\nIt is such a joy to have enough headphones for everyone because everyone can do daily reading, language, or even math assignments at the same time. When we first unrolled the new area rugs, the children's faces lit up—they immediately began testing out the \"soft spots\" and choosing their favorite colors to sit on. These rugs have become the heart of our room, defining a cozy \"home base\" for our morning songs and story time. Before, sitting on the cold, hard floor often led to lots of wiggling and restlessness; now, the students feel secure and \"tucked in\" within their own space, which has helped their focus during read-alouds improve tremendously.\r\n\r\nWe are also using our new \"grown-up\" tools to build big-kid independence. The mail sorter has become a favorite station; the students love the responsibility of checking their \"mailboxes\" to find their drawings and worksheets to take home. It's teaching them organizational skills before they even learn to tie their shoes! Meanwhile, the visual timers have turned transitions into a fun game. During \"Tidy-Up Time,\" the children watch the red sliver on the timer disappear, racing to finish cleaning before the color is gone. This visual aid takes away the \"scary\" mystery of time and helps them feel in control of their own pace.\r\n\r\nAs we look toward the second semesters, we will continue to use the podium for show-and-tell. I'll be using the mobile podium to create a \"Stage\" where each kindergartner can stand tall and share an object from home. This setup gives them so much confidence, making them feel like the stars of the classroom.
