In the preschool years, being able to color with crayons, cut with scissors, paint with a paintbrush and play with small objects such as lego, beads and puzzles, are integral to a child’s development. Self care activities such as tying shoelaces and using a spoon and fork to eat food, all require a degree of fine motor control. Children who struggle with any of these activities often feel frustrated. Fine-motor also applies to speech and language skills When we hear ‘fine-motor skill’, we tend to think it is about using your fingers for something like buttoning up, writing etc. With some children who are slow in talking, it is important for people to be aware that speech requires fine-motor skills too. Motivating activities greatly increases a childs' desire to work on their speech. The donations will help in two ways, 1. To keep the children motivated, I typically rotate the different activities so they stay novel. New and colorful materials excite our children and help motivate them to work through the skills and 2. The materials also work on a variety of skills, holding a pencil, using a pincher grasp, buttoning etc.
