When the new books arrived, they were excited to look through the different titles and immediately began choosing books that caught their interest. It is wonderful to see students have more choices and find books that make them want to read.\r\n\r\nThese books are doing much more than providing reading practice. The nonfiction books are helping students learn new vocabulary and build background knowledge about animals, science, people, places, and the world around them. The social-emotional books give us opportunities to discuss feelings, relationships, challenges, and real-life experiences. Students are able to connect new English words and concepts to American Sign Language (ASL) as they discuss and share what they have learned.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts has been seeing students become more confident and independent in choosing and completing books. Instead of reading simply because it is an assignment, we want our students to discover that books can teach them something new, help them understand themselves and others, and be enjoyable.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using these books to strengthen vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension while giving students regular opportunities to read independently and discuss their learning in ASL. They immediately began looking through the different titles, sharing books with one another, and choosing the ones they wanted to read. For my deaf students, having books that are accessible at their reading level gives them an opportunity to experience success and enjoyment as independent readers.\r\n\r\nWe are using the books for independent reading as well as opportunities to build vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension. The pictures provide important visual support, helping students connect English words with concepts they already know through American Sign Language (ASL). One of my favorite moments is seeing a student finish a book, share what they learned or enjoyed with classmates, and then eagerly look for another book to read.\r\n\r\nThese resources have also helped us expand the variety of books available in our classroom library. My students especially enjoy both fiction and nonfiction picture books, and having choices helps keep them interested and motivated.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building a culture of reading by giving students regular opportunities to choose books, read independently, discuss what they have read in ASL, and discover new topics that interest them. It means the world to me to have support from people I have never met but are still willing to help our students. \r\n\r\nI have a student that has a vision problem but loves to look at bugs so when I showed him how to use it he asked to go outside to look for more bugs. He was flapping his arms in excitement. \r\n\r\nI had bought a pool that was more sturdy for my students and we had used the steam boat activity set and placed them in the pool after we were finished building and decorating them. \r\n\r\nThey also really loved the fidgets and kaleidoscope so I am happy to have received multiple for them. We used the soccer goal, corn hole, and dart board together on our outside days which was almost everyday. Instead, they can focus on storytelling, critical thinking, and creativity.\r\n\r\nUsing the Insta360 X5, students have created immersive videos to explore history, geography, and social studies topics. They record role-plays, community observations, and real-world environments, then review the footage together in class.
