Because of you, my Deaf students now have access to an Insta360 X5 camera—an innovative tool that has transformed how they learn, express ideas, and share their stories.\r\n\r\nFor Deaf learners, learning is deeply visual. Traditional cameras often limit what students can capture, but the Insta360 X5 allows them to record their world from every angle at the same time. This has been incredibly empowering. Students no longer worry about missing important details, movements, or perspectives. Instead, they can focus on storytelling, critical thinking, and creativity.\r\n\r\nUsing the Insta360 X5, students have created immersive videos to explore history, geography, and social studies topics. They record role-plays, community observations, and real-world environments, then review the footage together in class. This has strengthened their comprehension, collaboration, and communication skills—especially through American Sign Language (ASL), facial expressions, and body language, which are essential parts of Deaf culture.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has given students confidence. Many of my students struggle to feel fully seen or heard in traditional learning environments. With this camera, they are the directors of their own learning. They proudly share their work with classmates, families, and the school community, knowing their perspectives matter.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped close learning gaps created by limited access to visual-rich tools and has opened new pathways for engagement and self-expression. Your generosity has opened doors for my students to explore places, cultures, and environments far beyond our island.\r\n\r\nBuilding Reading Skills Through Geography\r\nThese new books are more than just pages with maps and pictures—they are tools that help my Deaf students build background knowledge, strengthen reading comprehension, and connect language to real-world concepts. Through them, students are practicing important skills like identifying main ideas, comparing and contrasting different regions, and expanding their vocabulary with terms related to geography and culture.\r\n\r\nWhat Reading Looks Like in Our Classroom\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a very visual and interactive experience. I present lessons in American Sign Language (ASL), then we dive into the books together. Students point to maps, trace routes with their fingers, and discuss what they see through signs. We often pair the books with visual activities—like creating timelines, Venn diagrams, or map-matching games—so that the information sticks and becomes meaningful.\r\n\r\nStudent Joy and Engagement\r\nSome students have been especially captivated by the vivid photos of natural wonders and faraway cities. One student who rarely shows interest in books now lights up every time we open the pages about mountains and rivers—he even started drawing his own maps at home! Another student who loves animals keeps returning to the sections about wildlife around the world, eagerly sharing facts in ASL with her classmates.\r\n\r\nYour support has not just given us books—it has given my students a window to the world, sparked their curiosity, and shown them that learning can be an adventure. We planted baby tomato plants and raised them with care—watering them daily, trimming when needed, and learning how to identify healthy tomatoes from the bad ones. It became a hands-on science, math, and life skills lesson all in one.\r\n\r\nTheir faces lit up with excitement and curiosity. Many of my students come from language-deprived backgrounds, so having something so visual, tangible, and interactive made a big difference in their engagement and understanding. They took pride in caring for the plants and were amazed to see the transformation from seedling to fruit.\r\n\r\nThe next step was the most rewarding—we harvested the tomatoes and fresh basil to make homemade spaghetti sauce. The students followed a recipe, practiced measuring ingredients, and learned to follow multi-step directions. It was a delicious learning experience! This project helped them gain practical skills while reinforcing academic concepts in a meaningful way. We plan to continue gardening and exploring more cooking projects that tie into our lessons. Farm to table is truly the best—especially in Hawaii, where school lunches often fall short.","fullyFundedDate":1669780099385,"projectUrl":"project/childrens-paradise-gardening/6966231/","projectTitle":"Children's Paradise Gardening","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Katakura","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8826054"},{"teacherId":9746676,"projectId":8775102,"letterContent":"On behalf of the entire classroom, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donations to our special needs classroom.
