These materials have become an essential part of our Aloha ʻĀina project, where students investigate real-world issues impacting traditional Hawaiian cultural practices and arts. With these boards, students have been able to thoughtfully organize and present their research in meaningful ways. For example, one group is exploring the impact of the coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) on hala trees and how this threatens the practice of lau hala weaving. Another group is designing a laʻau lapaʻau garden to help restore access to traditional plant-based medicine on our campus. Seeing their ideas come to life visually has been incredibly powerful.\r\n\r\nMany students carefully designed their displays, incorporating cultural perspectives alongside scientific research. One memorable moment was watching a group working on cultivating wauke (paper mulberry) on campus and planning a kapa making workshop with middle school students in nearby traditional public schools. The boards helped transform their projects into something they could sharing with the broader community.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students are preparing to present their projects to their families and community partners at Windward Community College at the end of May. Using these tri-fold boards, they will showcase their research, the issues they addressed, the impacts on cultural practices, and what they have learned through this process. One group will be presenting how ungulates like wild boar affect native Hawaiian birds and featherwork traditions. Your support has not only provided materials, but has empowered students to connect science, culture, and stewardship in a deeply meaningful way. \r\n\r\nMahalo for being part of this journey and for helping our students become thoughtful caretakers of Hawaiʻi.","fullyFundedDate":1746483976836,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-youth-through-civic-action-an/9176230/","projectTitle":"Empowering Youth Through Civic Action and Aloha ʻĀina","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Fernandez-Brennan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2978942_orig.jpg?crop=3208,3208,x0,y395&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1704742324503","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kumuphil"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70824","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":132,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":33,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"9.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.2,"schoolId":70824,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Halau Ku Mana Public Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Halau Ku Mana Public Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/honolulu-school-district/halau-ku-mana-charter-school/70824"}
