Your contribution has instantly transformed our learning environment, and its impact goes far beyond just satisfying hungry bellies.\r\n\r\nIn a middle/high school classroom like mine, sustaining focus and energy throughout a long academic day is one of our biggest challenges. We often see a significant dip in concentration and productivity in the late afternoon, or when students arrive without having had breakfast or lunch. Thanks to your support, we now have a readily available resource to address those moments. A small, nutritious snack provides the quick energy boost needed to refocus, re-engage with the material, and allow students to finish strong. This ensures that every student has the physical and mental resources necessary to access the curriculum and succeed.\r\n\r\nCrucially, these snacks will also play a key role in our positive behavior and motivational system. We believe strongly in rewarding effort, participation, and academic integrity. Your donation allows me to use snacks as meaningful, immediate, and high-value incentives to reinforce positive habits.\r\n\r\nFor example, snacks will be used to:\r\n\r\nReward exceptional effort on challenging assignments or group projects.\r\n\r\nAcknowledge consistent participation during class discussions.\r\n\r\nIncentivize goal setting and achievement, such as meeting a reading milestone or improving a test score.\r\n\r\nPromote community by sharing snacks during our collaborative Friday work sessions.\r\n\r\nThe simple act of being able to offer a student a small reward for a job well done communicates value and encouragement, fostering a culture of high expectations and mutual respect. This immediate positive reinforcement helps students connect their hard work directly to a tangible, satisfying outcome.\r\n\r\nYour thoughtfulness shows our students that the community is invested in their success, both inside and outside the classroom. You are helping us build a classroom that is not only academically challenging but also supportive, energetic, and engaging.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for being such a crucial partner in our students' education. Through DonorsChoose, we've been able to bring in materials and opportunities that would have otherwise been out of reach.\r\n\r\nThe projects funded by generous donors have not only improved our physical classroom environment, but have motivated students in ways that go far beyond the supplies themselves. When students see that people from across the country—people they've never met—believe in their potential, it builds confidence and reminds them that their education matters.\r\n\r\nDonorsChoose has helped us create hands-on learning experiences, provide updated materials, and support students who thrive when given the right tools. Whether it's books that reflect their identities, supplies that make learning more engaging, or resources that strengthen their academic skills, each project has filled gaps that directly impact their daily learning.\r\n\r\nFor our students in Pāhoa, these donations represent more than items—they represent opportunity, hope, and the message that their goals are worth investing in. The students spent three class periods learning how to handle suturing equipment and how to suture in several different styles.\r\n\r\nTo begin, we watched short videos of doctors explaining how to hold and manipulate the equipment. Students practiced the proper technique for using the needle holder and forceps. The two left-handed students in the class were easily able to participate, since two of the suture kits are specially designed for left-handed users. \r\n\r\nThe next day, students used needles and sutures and learned how to perform simple interrupted sutures and knot-tying. They were completely absorbed in the task, and occasionally frustrated, as their hands began the slow process of developing that muscle memory that allows skilled doctors to make suturing look so easy.\r\n\r\nThe final day, students learned the horizontal mattress and vertical mattress sutures, and which suture styles are chosen based on the type of wound. One student even continued on to the running locking suture.\r\n\r\nThese students will remember this activity for the rest of their lives. It brought me so much pleasure to help these kids experience suturing. Your support is making a huge difference in my students' daily lives and learning. A significant number of our students do not have reliable electricity at home, so these charging stations are more than just a convenienc, they are a vital tool that ensures they can remain connected and access their classwork online. Before, a dead device could mean missing an assignment or falling behind whereas now they start each day fully powered and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting impact has been on our classroom environment and student engagement. The charging stations were set up at each desk grouping, allowing for easy access. Students simply check out a charging cord if they need one, and they are very grateful for the availability. This system has the added benefit of encouraging students to keep their school-issued devices on their desks and charged, which has significantly reduced the temptation to be on their personal phones during instructional time. It's wonderful to see them focused on our digital lessons and collaborative projects instead.\r\n\r\nI've been particularly moved by the effect on some of my quieter students. For example, one student who was often hesitant to participate has become incredibly engaged now that she can reliably use her tablet for research and to contribute to shared documents.
