Recently, small groups gathered in different parts of the room to work through a challenging math task, sharing strategies and checking one another's reasoning. Students were able to settle into a spot that worked for them, then shift seats when it was time to compare ideas. When the materials first arrived, students immediately noticed. I heard excited comments like, \"We can use these today?\" and \"This spot helps me focus.\" Their enthusiasm and care for the new resources have been wonderful to see.\r\nNext, students will keep using the alternative seating as we move into upcoming lessons and group projects. For instance, we've integrated our new materials into daily community circles and collaborative group work, creating a safe, structured environment where students practice active listening, emotional regulation, and empathetic communication. Just last week, I watched students use our new breakout spaces to support one another through complex academic problem-solving while checking in on each other's well-being—a powerful reminder of how deeply cognitive growth and emotional support go hand in hand.\r\n\r\nAs we look ahead, our next steps involve expanding these SEL practices into student-led restorative projects and collaborative Socratic discussions, empowering them to take full ownership of our classroom culture.
