At this stage in second grade, children are transitioning from \"learning to read\" to \"reading to learn,\" and these books support critical comprehension skills such as retelling, character traits and feelings, story elements, and more.\r\n \r\n We use the books from Rooted in Reading (RiR) curriculum alongside Benchmark Workshop. I introduce a skill using the Benchmark mentor text, followed by modeling and practicing that skill through an Interactive Read-Aloud with one of the books from RiR. My favorite strategy to model and use with students is partner discussion, as it allows students to share what they thought or learned from the books.\r\n-Partner Discussions (also known as \"Turn & Talk\"): Students discuss their opinions on what the book is about, predict what might happen next, or explain why they think a character acts a certain way. \r\n\r\nThe new books have made a noticeable difference across our entire classroom in two major areas:\r\n1. Developing Good Readers and Good Listeners: The detailed illustrations, rich dialogue, and relatable character emotions help students stay engaged while encouraging them to ask thoughtful questions to learn more.\r\n2. Helping Students Become Better Thinkers: Students learn to think deeply and independently about character motivations, and they enjoy friendly debates about how a character feels and why.\r\n\r\nThese books have not only helped my students, but they have also helped me teach reading skills in a more fun and engaging way. They help my students realize that reading is about much more than just the words on a pageāit's about how a story makes you feel, the connections you form, and the discussions you share with others who have read the same story.","fullyFundedDate":1783883509949,"projectUrl":"project/2nd-graders-are-rooted-in-reading/10214207/","projectTitle":"2nd graders are Rooted in Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. T","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10484504"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50746","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":550,"numTeachers":42,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":74,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":46.7,"schoolId":50746,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Westside Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Westside Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/whitfield-county-school-district/westside-elementary-school/50746"}
