I explained that a group of people who love to help teachers and students, worked together to purchase a lot of our classroom items: our rug, our pencils, erasers, cleaning wipes, blocks, treasure box prizes and more. The class wanted to know who these generous people were. I told them I didn't know all of them. The students were shocked that \"strangers\" wanted to help them. I took that moment to teach them the importance of volunteerism, community out-reach, acts of service, and generosity. At the end of the discussion, we all agreed the world would be a lot harder and meaner if everyone only cared about themselves, and that helping is its own reward. \r\nOf all the items you helped bring to my classroom, the new rug is by far the most loved. The rug is used to sit and read books or to take brain breaks. The blocks have been shared and loved so much already. They don't realize it now, but those blocks are helping build their fine motor skills, demonstrating laws of physics, and allowing them to practice interpersonal skills. The paper towels and cleaning wipes are most useful (especially after we celebrated one student's birthday with a very melt-y ice cream cake and lots of blue icing). \r\nAbove all, I am most thankful for the pencils and erasers. My dearest and sincerest hope is to help train up a generation of writers—a generation of thinkers, helpers, and doers.
