As a special education teacher in a Life Skills classroom serving students with significant disabilities, I see every day how something as simple as hunger can have a major impact on a child's ability to access instruction. For many of my students, eating is not simply about satisfying hunger. Food can also provide comfort, predictability, sensory input, motivation, and an important sense of security throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nMy students have a wide range of needs, including autism, developmental disabilities, communication challenges, sensory differences, and behavioral needs. Many of them experience food avoidance or have very specific preferences about what they will eat. Some students have difficulty communicating that they are hungry, while others may communicate their discomfort through behaviors such as crying, refusing work, withdrawing, or becoming dysregulated. Having familiar, preferred snacks available allows me to address these needs proactively rather than waiting until hunger becomes a barrier to learning.\r\n\r\nOur school serves a high-poverty community, and access to food outside of school is not always consistent for every child. Our students also eat lunch early in the school day, which can leave a long stretch of time between lunch and dismissal. For some students, that extended period without food can be especially difficult. Having snacks available helps bridge that gap and ensures that hunger does not prevent my students from participating in the final hours of their school day.\r\n\r\nThe snacks also serve an important emotional and sensory purpose. Many of my students rely on routines and familiar experiences to feel safe and regulated. Offering a preferred snack can help a student transition from one activity to another, recover from a difficult moment, or return to learning after becoming overwhelmed. For students who struggle with sensory processing, certain foods provide predictable textures, tastes, and oral sensory input that can be calming and reassuring. Snacks can become part of a structured routine that helps students understand what comes next and gives them something positive to anticipate.\r\n\r\nThese snacks are also valuable instructional tools. In my classroom, learning does not stop because a student has significant disabilities. We work on communication, independence, academics, social skills, self-regulation, and functional life skills every day. Snacks give us opportunities to practice requesting, making choices, identifying preferences, using communication systems, waiting, taking turns, following directions, and demonstrating independence. A simple snack can become a lesson in communication, mathematics, social interaction, and self-help skills.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, having these snacks available helps my students feel understood and supported. Instead of viewing food preferences or sensory needs as obstacles, I can use them as opportunities to build trust and engagement. When a student knows that their needs will be recognized and respected, they are often more willing to participate, communicate, and try something new.\r\n\r\nThe impact goes beyond the snack itself. A child who is no longer distracted by hunger can focus on a lesson. A child who has a familiar sensory experience can regulate and return to the group. A child who struggles to communicate can learn that they have a way to express what they need. A child who may have started the day feeling unsuccessful can experience a moment of comfort, choice, and success.\r\n\r\nBecause of the generosity of our donors, these snacks are helping me create a classroom where my students can learn without hunger standing in their way. They are helping meet physical needs while also supporting emotional regulation, sensory processing, communication, independence, and engagement. Every snack may seem like a small thing, but for my students, these small moments can make a very big difference. Thank you for helping ensure that my students have the nourishment, comfort, and support they need to be ready to learn and succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1776544631906,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-snacking/10196547/","projectTitle":"Sensory Snacking","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jamie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jamie-andrews"},{"teacherId":2586361,"projectId":10069610,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our project, \"Building Independence with Sensory Supports in a Life Skills Classroom.\" Your generosity is making a meaningful difference in the lives of our students every day.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our classroom now has sensory tools and resources that help students build independence, confidence, and essential life skills.
