Thanks to your support, my classroom was completely transformed over the last few weeks of school.\r\nTeaching 10th-grade English Language Arts to students with learning disabilities means I am constantly looking for creative ways to break down barriers. Many of my students come to me with a deep aversion to reading, often because they've struggled with it for so long. On top of that, we simply don't get the opportunity to sit down and read full novels the way we used to. My primary goal this year was simple but massive: just get them reading, period.\r\nTo bridge the gap between their reading comfort zones and our required curriculum, I tried a new strategy: pairing Dr. Seuss's \"Yertle the Turtle\" with Shakespeare's \"Macbeth\".\r\nBy using an accessible, familiar text like Yertle, we were able to dive deep into complex themes of absolute power, corruption, and the inevitable downfall of a tyrant before we ever even opened a page of Shakespeare. Because they felt confident decoding the easier text, their anxiety melted away.\r\nThe results were absolutely magical. My students weren't just engaged—they were completely invested. I had students who usually hide behind their desks when it's time to read actually volunteering to read out loud to the class. Seeing that spark of confidence and watching them make the connection between a children's book king and a Shakespearean tragic hero is exactly why I teach.\r\nYour donation did more than just provide materials; it gave my students a entry point into classical literature that they otherwise would have felt completely locked out of. This strategy allowed me to quickly assess what my students understood and where the gaps were, helping me differentiate instruction based on language comprehension levels and individual needs. My students truly loved using these boards, and their enthusiasm was evident in their willingness to participate and share their thinking. The impact of your generosity continues to shape our classroom in meaningful ways. Moving forward, I plan to use these tools in our upcoming lessons on the Cold War and Globalization by incorporating them into openers and exit tickets, where students will respond through writing and drawing.
