So much of a student's success on high stakes tests, college-entrance exams, and classroom performance is determined by the reading level of the student. I make my students read every day for 15 minutes from a free-choice novel. Beers and Probst (2017) found that there is an increase of 104% in word exposure in students when 10 additional minutes a day of reading is added to the average student's daily routine. For the ELL student, this makes a HUGE impact, and according to educators Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle (2018), the best way to get reluctant readers to read is through "free choice reading," which is why I want to expand my classroom library with these different appealing books.
