During teacher-led small groups, students use the magnetic letters and individual whiteboards to hear, segment, and build words as we introduce new spelling patterns and sound rules. During our Skills block rotations, the Scrabble letter tiles have become a favorite tool for independent word work. Students love using the tiles to physically build, move, and arrange sound patterns at their centers before writing the complete words on paper. Just recently during a small group lesson on spelling patterns, one student struggled to blend a word on paper—but as soon as they moved the magnetic letters into place and tapped out the sounds on their whiteboard, their eyes lit up as they shouted, \"I built it! I read it!\"\r\n\r\nWhen my second graders first saw the bright magnetic boards, organized letter trays, and Scrabble tile sets laid out, they were thrilled! They immediately loved how tactile and organized everything was. Many of them asked if we were \"playing a word game,\" and their enthusiasm for our phonics time skyrocketed right from day one.\r\n\r\nNow that our small group and independent rotation routines with these manipulatives are established, our next step is applying these decoding and spelling skills directly into fluent reading and daily writing. Students are currently using their newly mastered spelling patterns to construct full sentences on their whiteboards and apply their phonics knowledge during independent reading and writing time.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for bringing multi-sensory phonics tools into our room to build confident, joyful readers!","fullyFundedDate":1720716745070,"projectUrl":"project/skills-block/8467536/","projectTitle":"Skills Block","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2061840_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1451310643917","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/chantay-anderson"},{"teacherId":2061840,"projectId":9269940,"letterContent":"These new rugs have completely elevated our whole-group instruction and emotional support routines! The main carpet gives each of my 24 students their own designated spot during our group gathering time, which helps them stay focused, respect each other's personal space, and dive right into our interactive organizers and shared lessons. Meanwhile, the \"Take a Break\" rug in our calming corner offers a quiet, defined sanctuary for anyone who needs a quick moment to reset. Just last week, one of my students was feeling visibly overwhelmed before a activity. They independently walked over to the \"Take a Break\" rug, took a few deep breaths on the cozy carpet, and rejoined our group five minutes later ready to learn—a huge win for self-regulation!\r\n\r\nWhen the students first walked in and saw the bright, beautiful rugs laid out, their faces completely lit up! There were gasps, big smiles, and immediate excitement to find out where their new spots would be. They couldn't wait to sit down, and they instantly took pride in having a comfortable, defined space that was truly meant just for them.\r\n\r\nNow that our carpet routine is seamless, my students are using this central gathering space to collaborate on our whole-group interactive organizers and anchor charts. Our next big step is putting our shared carpet ideas into action as students work together on group literacy and learning projects, knowing they have both an energetic space to collaborate and a calm space to recharge whenever they need it.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for bringing comfort, structure, and joy to our classroom every single day!","fullyFundedDate":1746786974821,"projectUrl":"project/whole-group/9269940/","projectTitle":"Whole Group","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2061840_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1451310643917","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/chantay-anderson"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_75111","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1489,"numTeachers":90,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":52,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.9,"schoolId":75111,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Alcova Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Alcova Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/gwinnett-county-public-schools/alcova-elementary-school/75111"}
