We first crafted bookmarks and Fall picture frames. Our kids enjoyed sharing the stickers and bling at their tables to make their own unique creation. They also made Gingerbread house picture frame to hang on their tree and again they loved using the provided stickers to make it their own. We have started using the pencils in learning to write sentences and short stories. We are using the stickers and candy as rewards for doing good work and learning sight words. Your generosity has equipped every student with the tools needed to transform passive note-taking into active learning through interactive notebooks.\r\n\r\nHow are we using the new resources?\r\nThe new materials are the foundation of our Interactive Notebooks (INBs), which act as living textbooks and creative study guides for each student. This project has moved learning from listening and writing to cutting, sorting, and constructing knowledge.\r\n\r\nA specific moment that demonstrates this was during our unit on decimals. Instead of simply listing definitions, students used your supplies to create a complex accordion fold-able. They used the vibrant colored paper to assign a different color to each category (e.g., nouns are blue, verbs are red) and used the new, sharp scissors to cut precise flaps. They then used the glue sticks to securely bind this hands-on tool into their composition books. This hands-on, spatial activity helped them visualize the relationships between concepts in a way that just writing words on a page never could.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nWhen the boxes arrived filled with stacks of brightly colored paper and shiny new scissors, the students reacted with genuine excitement. They were thrilled to have their own, high-quality tools—no more waiting to share dull scissors or fighting over the last drippy bottle of glue!\r\n\r\nThe composition books felt like a fresh start and a dedicated place for serious learning. The colored paper immediately signaled to them that this learning would be engaging and creative. They now approach note-taking not as a chore, but as an art project where they are actively building their own knowledge base. The materials legitimized the notebook project and made them feel valued.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students?\r\nOur current lesson involves applying the knowledge they've been recording in their INBs. The next exciting step is using their personalized notebooks as their \"open-book\" resource for a comprehensive unit review and a major assessment.\r\n\r\nInstead of just testing rote memorization, we will be testing their ability to navigate and utilize the organized, colorful resources they personally constructed.
