We have already put them to great use in our drawing unit, where students are learning value, drawing from observation, and breaking subjects down into basic shapes. One of our first lessons used the sketchbooks to practice shading from light to dark, and it was amazing to watch students experiment with pressure, blending, and mark-making in a space that truly belongs to them.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the stack of brand-new sketchbooks, their excitement filled the room. Many had never owned a sketchbook before, and several immediately started flipping through the blank pages imagining what they would create. A few even hugged theirs or wrote their name on the inside cover right away. It was clear that having their own sketchbook made them feel like real artists.\r\n\r\nWhile students have the option to leave their sketchbooks at school for safekeeping, many have chosen to take them home so they can continue working on their artwork outside of class. They proudly share their at-home drawings, and it has sparked wonderful conversations about practice, improvement, and creativity beyond the classroom walls.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has allowed us to begin a long-term portfolio project where students will continue practicing observation drawing, value studies, and shape-based drawing throughout the semester. Our next steps include sketching everyday classroom objects from life, comparing proportions, and building more confidence in drawing what they see rather than what they think they see.
