Since COVID, when we didn't have a choice but to teach from a computer screen, it is a battle to move away from it again. Books are expensive, and it is hard to get a new title added to the curriculum, getting a physical copy to my students is even harder, especially at short notice. The copies allowed freedom of students getting up and acting out different scenes as we reviewed the play. Also, when they were working in groups, my students were looking and talking to each other, instead of a computer screen.\r\n\r\nThis was a wonderful addition to the 10th Lit reading list. It was an excellent comparison to Sophocles' classic tragedy, Antigone. I am a firm believer in bridging the gap between the classics and the modern; show the students where the modern has its roots so they better understand how playwright uses the structure to enhance the theme, characters, and the overall essence of the play itself. \r\n\r\nFor the unit assessment, we did a timed essay (the first for my students). Having the text in their hands helps them feel more prepared to write and reference different scenes as they compose. It also helps them review MLA for writing as well, far better than an electronic version ever will.","fullyFundedDate":1730509473249,"projectUrl":"project/removing-fences-when-reading-austus-wils/8908504/","projectTitle":"Removing Fences when Reading Austus Wilson's Fences","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bir","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8920629_orig.jpg?crop=1898,1898,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1673378816607","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8920629"},{"teacherId":8920629,"projectId":7124646,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping my students to get copies of No Fear Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet. Not only for the modern English translation to help my native English speakers learn to understand and appreciate Shakespearean verse, but also my Spanish speaking students have a copy of the play in their own language, with the original Shakespeare text to accompany it as we read it aloud in class.\r\n\r\nHaving the modern English paired with the original Shakespeare text helps the students to hear the rhythm of the original verse, but when they go to analyze it, the modern text helps them get the underlining jokes and innuendos that are from Elizabethan English slang. The same is true of the Spanish translations for my students who are just learning the English language. Shakespeare can be difficult for the best readers, and my students are only just getting introduced to his writings. Thank you for helping me make a good introduction.","fullyFundedDate":1683642860685,"projectUrl":"project/shakespeare-across-the-globe/7124646/","projectTitle":"Shakespeare Across The Globe","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bir","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8920629_orig.jpg?crop=1898,1898,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1673378816607","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8920629"},{"teacherId":3713767,"projectId":8910305,"letterContent":"Happy New Year! We ended 2024 in my classroom with a bang, and it was all thanks to you. It was a beautiful experience watching 10th graders soak in a book without me having to push them. I even had one young man who kept reading ahead! He had not done that with any other book from this year. \r\n\r\nOur class read the book based on the pre-determined sections. After each part, the students completed a few discussion prompts, which lead to a whole group discussion and review of the text. \r\n\r\nWe ended the unit by having the students create a theme park based on the book. The students drew out a map of their park and then created a Google Slide Presentation explaining the connection to the book. Considering they were preparing for exams and End-of-Course tests, I know they enjoyed this summative assessment. I have included photos of their work - I was impressed! \r\n\r\nThank you again for contributing to my classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1731119690452,"projectUrl":"project/fired-up-for-bradbury/8910305/","projectTitle":"Fired Up For Bradbury","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bahorich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3713767_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1689042634187","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3713767"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_47852","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1801,"numTeachers":85,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":58,"percentWhite":27,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":70.8,"schoolId":47852,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Statesboro High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Statesboro High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/bulloch-county-school-district/statesboro-high-school/47852"}
