We are currently working on the project *\"Clay Chemistry: The Science of Ceramics in Art,\"* where students explore the chemical composition of clay and how it transforms during firing. A specific moment that stands out is when students made items on the wheel, as well as using hand building techniques, and observed the shrinkage as the clay turned from plastic to bone dry. This hands-on experience has enriched their understanding of both the science and craft of ceramics.\r\n\r\nThe students were visibly excited and curious when they first saw the fresh clay. Many commented on how smooth and malleable it was compared to previous materials they had worked with. There was a buzz of enthusiasm as they anticipated shaping their ideas into three-dimensional forms. The tactile nature of the clay inspired them creatively.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will be exploring glazing techniques and how different glaze formulations interact with the clay bodies they've used. They will conduct small experiments applying various glaze recipes and then firing their pieces to see the chemical reactions in action—how heat changes color, texture, and strength. Ultimately, students will create a final project that combines artistic vision with a scientific understanding of materials, culminating in a gallery-style exhibition to share their work with the school community.\r\n\r\nI would love it if General Motors had someone available to come speak in person or via Zoom about the automotive industry and how ceramics and these scientific concepts are used, as well as the importance of STEAM education. It would be an incredible opportunity to connect students directly with industry professionals and deepen their appreciation of how art, science, and technology intersect in the real world.","fullyFundedDate":1755535107871,"projectUrl":"project/clay-chemistry-the-science-of-ceramics/9619291/","projectTitle":"Clay Chemistry: The Science of Ceramics in Art","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wood","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10186677"},{"teacherId":9986973,"projectId":9275320,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support to my classroom. Myself and my students have enjoyed and appreciated your contribution! \r\nThe students love the professional pencil sharpener! It keeps them in business of writing and coloring with sharp points. It functions so well- never gets stuck and doesn't make a mess. We also have a great place to store the cell phones now! Some days the students have a choice to use the phone box or not. This allows them a choice which makes them consider what is best for them in the moment (and sometimes I strongly recommend it so they get the point!). On assessment days, they know to go ahead and place them there until we finish. \r\nStickers always bring smiles to the kids. I also have them send a picture of their paper with the sticker to parents. This gives them so talking points about the activity as well as some bragging props about the work they are doing. \r\nThe chart paper has been helpful with collaboration and small group activities.","fullyFundedDate":1750197854005,"projectUrl":"project/lets-up-classroom-engagement/9275320/","projectTitle":"Let's UP Classroom Engagement!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nelson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9986973_orig.jpg?crop=379,379,x91,y96&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746714898538","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9986973"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70573","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1206,"numTeachers":56,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":79,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.5,"schoolId":70573,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Adairsville High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Adairsville High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/bartow-county-school-district/adairsville-high-school/70573"}
